    Nice pictures again Kev.

The picture with the artist. top right corner shows what looks like the side of St Georges Hall, notice the large doorway which is still there today, but the length of railings suggests that the present day steps have not always been there?

They're knock-outs those Kev. Absolutely steaming hot.

Where'd do you find these? The only ones I can find in the Central library are those ones in the green folders on the shelf.

Dave. These are online and can be found on the pool cd rom or you can join the search room at the back and get folders galore out - if you've got a few weeks to spare.

Cheers for that Ged, I'll have to learn to open my mouth when I go there. Save people on here having to answer my daft questions.

    Default Liverpool people

Well said, Spike - the same thoughts went through my mind. Absolutely
    shattering photos, Kev.

Just one quick comment - I could make a lot more. Compare the turnout and physique of the Indian soldiers in the 1901 pic with those of their British
counterparts in the 1911 photos. What thoughts went through the latter's
minds when they confronted their striking compatriots?

    Great pic's Kev',
I know this will sound like an obvious question, but what actually went on at the customs house? I ask, because the couple of photo's I've seen of it lately, are mainly of people asleep,or lying on the steps, which gives the image of a glorified dosshouse!

Ged, I've had many a nosey on that wondrous site of yours, and still return to it often. There can't be another site of it's kind to touch it.

Thanks Dave. Comments like that make it all worthwhile - cheers.

Steve. I used to have to frequent the Customs House which was housed in Cunard Buildings and latterly in the new one at Kings Dock, due to my job being an Import clearance clerk. Like the old Customs House, they had a long room and Customs officers dealing with clearance paperwork on goods brought into the country and in particular those clearing at Aintree Containerbase, Bridle Road as it was then, Speke Freight terminal or any of the docks ranging from Garston to Seaforth.

You'd complete your C10 (later C88), lodge it then have to keep checking up with the Clearance window/seat/gate to see if you had the red 'Out of charge' note to take down the dock/inland clearance depot then you could arrange your haulage to the final destination/importers premises etc - or sometimes you'd have the dreaded C20X query note and have to go down, collect it, bring it back the office, remedy it then re-lodge it - all very slow and antiquated and all this time the goods could be incurring quay rent so you'd have to be quick.

These day it's all done by DTI - Direct tader input - electronically - so less need to actually be on site or to visit the Customs.

    Thanks Ged,
(I first thought you meant you worked at the original customs house, and I thought, how old is this guy!!!!) The period I was referring to was the early part of the 20th cent',where the photo's show people(sailors?) kipping on the steps of the building, and benches nearby.I thought there might have been some nautical connection with it? (Typical,I cant remember were I saw the pic's now)
    Thanks Steve.
