LIVERPOOL developer Beetham has secured its future after winning permission to develop a ?1bn skyscraper in London.

The company is being allowed to construct a 52 storey landmark on the banks of the Thames in partnership with Russian property tycoon Sergei Polonsky.

Beetham, which is saddled with huge bank debts, has been sweating on the decision for months amid concerns it faced an uncertain fate if the decision was unfavourable.

Minister Hazel Blears called in the scheme last year to examine whether it met tall building planning guidelines for the Blackfriars area of London.

A spokesman for the Department of Communities and Local Government said: "The minister considers the proposals are in appropriate locations for tall buildings and that the design would be of high quality."
