Default WW2 pillbox on corner of Springwood Ave / Woolton Rd

I've driven past it many times over the years and often wondered why it was put there. Anyone know why? Wasn't Garston on our side in the war

Are there many more of them in the area?

Don't know why it was there but often played on it as a kid. There were a few dotted around the area. I remember one on Heath Road, between the railway bridge and the start of Brodie Avenue. It was set into a slope and the back had a long drop behind it. We used to dangle a rope over and then climb down. Slipped once and took a load of skin off my hands through rope burns. I think that particular one is long gone.

Thanks for the link Ged. One of the replies said it was part of a perimeter defence ring. Still think Garston had something to do with it

There is one of these pillboxes as you drive down the Formby bypass just pass the Ince Blundel Hotel, near the site of the microlight base.

Also, for the history buffs; in the fifties there was a murder on the Wirrel, when a womans body was found in a pill box, it caursed quite a sensation and was in the news for quite some time 'The Pill Box Murder' was the headlines.

    Default Pillbox springwood avenue.

Put there 1940 at height of feared German Invasion. To protect main road Junction leading to and from Speke Airport/Factories/Garston Docks etc.

The railway embankment between HuntsX and South Parkway has recently been cleared of undergrowth and trees.
This has uncovered 3 concrete 'Dragons Teeth' about half a mile out from Huntsx (liverpool bound side).
    Anyone else noticed them?

There are more of these on Stalbridge Avenue, Greenbank Park side of the railway bridge.
