    Default 10th March 09

    Dale Street (lower end)

A sight very familiar to me having lived in that side street (Trueman st) for thirteen years. Whitbreads was then at the top of the street, the big Threlfalls chimney right outside our kitchen window. An elavated passageway ran from one building across the street to another near the top and the big brown tankers were frequent sights. The smell of hops brewing was constantly in the air and there was Dave's little corner shop built into Blackburn Assurance buildings though you'd never know to look at it now.

On the corner of Trueman St is the best surviving example of a Merchants house in liverpool according to the blue plaque, it belonged to John Houghton, a brewer who was also a fundraiser to do with the nearby Christ Church on Hunter Street. Robinson & Neal painters and decorators shop was next in line followed by another art deco building of the area, the Mitre pub (now the Ship and Mitre) and regular winner of the CAMRA award.

Ged you needed a few bob to buy wallpaper from Robertson and Neal I think they mostly catered for the upper class with all their flock paper.
Had a hell of a job today with my geese, they wanted to get off the train at Kirkdale so I told them Sandhills is nearer the canal

Those Geese again or are they ducks. Yes, you're right about Robinson and Neal, I think they were also office outfitters.

That's a terrific shot of the old Seamens Orphanage. I had an ancestor who was resident there in 1901 after the loss of his seafarer father. The census described him as an "Inmate Scholar", aged 12. I remember fishing in the lake around 1950.

Quite a few must have had that few bob 'cos they're still going today after 110 years, now in Sefton Street.

Default Is Liverpool a Town or a City?

Well actually City which Liverpool became in 1880 with the formation of the Church of England Diocese of Liverpool. Despite being commonly known in Liverpool as the "Anglican" cathedral, its correct name of course is Liverpool Cathedral. There is no Anglican Church as such in England
