Liverpool fishing industry was probably ended with the sale to Milford of the last 3 trawlers Celtia, Goosander, and Gallinule in 1939.
Then on it was only small boat owners who made a living catching and selling the fish.
The last full time fisherman, from the Mersey was my brother John seen here mending his nets on the "Cocklehole" slipway in the 1960`s, with his boat the Comrade just below him

My late father worked for Tate & Lyle/ Huskisson Transit. I remember well,he often returned from work in the evening (mid 60's)with fresh-fish.I've no idea where it came from;perhaps straight off the boat ?

Most probably off our kid, he always had dockers on the quayside waiting for him to come in with his fish at the Coburg Dock.

I remember your brother from the mid sixties, I was a Fireman at Coburg Dock Fire station. He often came in for a wash and brush up after a fishing trip and gave us shrimps.

The station was opposite Smith & coggins, at the bottom of Coburg dock avenue, next to the dockers canteen , about 300 yards from the Cockle Hole (South Ferry Basin).

I got it!!! I worked at James Troop and went to that canteen and also the one at Brunswick Dock too. They were about the same distance apart from Troops. Wooden tables and benches and the best bacon sandwiches known to mankind.

Did you ever know Mr Oxton, a fisherman who operated from the Cocklehole?

The brother remembers him as he had a habit of breaking down and having to be towed in by my brother, His boat was eventually run down by a tug in the Mersey he escaped with just a ducking. Here`s a picture I took in 1958 of some of the lads from the cocklehole,my brother is the one with the smock on and thats his boat on the left with the canvas on
