is getting spruced up!

LIVERPOOL?S city centre flyover is in line for a ?185,000 make-over.

Public realm officials want to carry out ?environmental improvements? to the Churchill Way carriageway.

If the plans get the go-ahead, the south sections of the rooftop highway will be lit up at night.

If funding can be found, supporters hope the north carriageway and the pedestrian walkway over neighbouring Hunter Street could also be lit up.

The move, which will be funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency, is the latest stage of an initiative to light up landmark structures in the city.

Downlighters would be fixed to the underside of the flyover which would also be lit in a blue ?wash? of light underneath.

In a similar scheme the Rocket flyover at the end of the M62 was lit up for Capital of Culture year.

A city council spokesman said: ?The Churchill Way flyover is a gateway to the city centre in the same way the Rocket is a gateway to the city.

?The lighting at the Rocket has been very successful.?

Liverpool council?s executive member for the environment Berni Turner said: ?I?d welcome anything that improved the attractiveness of what is, in my opinion, an eyesore.

?But it must be done sensitively, with no additional light pollution, and not detract from the historic buildings around it.? more
