    Default Wooden Roads

I wonder how many roads had wooden sets in Liverpool instead of cobbles.
The one I remember is Easby Rd in Kirkdale which is where most us learned to ride our two wheeler bikes as it was a smooth surface, much easier than cobble stones.
When they were doing any repairs or digging old tramlines up, people would take the sets for fuel for their fire as being full of oil and tar they burned for hours

Lodge Lane had wooden sets until 1947 when ,during the dreadful snows and the rail strike ,no coal or coke was available and the people of Lodge Lane "liberated" the tar soaked sets and used them on their fires. They smoked like hell, the sky was black for a few days, the tramlines also stood up about 8 inches above the surface. Happy days eh?

There is one right now, right outside the old Bishop Goss school on Rose Hill. We noticed it during the unveiling of the 2nd Little Italy plaque and the Daily Post came down and took some photos of it and done an article.

My old primary school road had them back in the earlly 60's. Arnot Street, the top end was wood but it did get slippery in the wet and cold.

Roe Street in the town centre, from St Johns lane down to Whitechapel used to be all wood sets.

Walton Lane along the length od Stanley Park was also wood sets. This was the section that had the tram lines.

    Hi,
Bold St Had wooden sets, they said it was to stop the upper classes
being disturbed by the horses clattering down the Street, I know they where there in 1952 as I came off my James 197 Captain in the rain and I was spinning in middle of the St trying to get old of the throttle as it was set to fast tick over, and nobody could help incase they got cought up in the rear wheel.
I remember it well, as the song goe's.

    cheer's,

    Tippo.
