    Default Christmas 08 in Liverpool

Liverpool will stage its "biggest and best" Christmas celebrations to bring 2008's culture year to a festive climax, organisers have said.

More than 50 different acts, a market, two grottos, an outdoor ice rink and real reindeer will all feature in the programme of events.

It starts on Thursday with the switch on of the Christmas lights, which will include new retail site Liverpool One.

Entertainment will be laid on every Thursday for Christmas shoppers.

Liverpool City Council said the key entertainment areas would be Clayton Square, Church Street, Lord Street, Bold Street, Williamson Square and Whitechapel.

It is hoped the combination of entertainment and the new Liverpool One centre will encourage tens of thousands of new shoppers to choose the city to buy presents.

Council leader Warren Bradley said: "Liverpool is staging its biggest and best ever Christmas programme to reflect the dramatic improvements the city has undergone, and also to bring our Capital of Culture year to a fitting festive climax with a special atmosphere in the run up to Christmas."

Photographing an outdoor Ice rink would be awesome. Hope they put It In the right place.

They should dress two chavs up as reindeer's though and make parents pay for their kids to ride them. We might as well demean some humans.

Sounds very festive.. Hope it turns out well for all ..An open air ice rink would truely make it festive..

We (in Hawaii), have an indoor one.. and that does make it feel Christmas-like when you go to have some fun in the warm weather..

    Enjoy..

Birmingham & Edinburgh (and probably many other cities) often have open ice rinks at Christmas. Has Liverpool never had one before?

I thought last year's Christmas lights in Liverpool were beautiful. I can't wait to see this year's efforts. There was such a lovely festive atmosphere in the streets.

Lovely Pics! I didn't even know the lights had been turned on!

I can't do (or think about) Christmas until 01 December after which I will take the time to go and see the lights with the kids. They were really good last year - these look even better.
