Deprived of its unique dockland waters Liverpool
becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in
canals to view its modern museum describing
how it once was?

I know the one you mean, was going to put that in my caption actually but he may have come after me, looks a big fellow
Some great characters there Ged! One day they're there, then a couple of years pass, before you realise they've gone....probably for ever! Do you remember "Chicken George" the big black guy,who made quite an impression when he entered a pub!(another one who just disappeared, though I heard he'd died?)Also, is that page on your site meant to be mainly blank?I could only see the top part! (probably my p/c)
It should be a full page Steve but it might take a few mins to fully upload cos of the amount of pics.
I remember Chicken George, he always had a snooker cue with him and shouted things out, wore a big hat and had grey stubble. He was a gentle giant though, loud but would engage in amiable conversation with you.
I knew his actual surname but just can't think of it at the mo, he was friends with my pa-in-laws brother who knocked around with Sonny Philips and Jobo Jones who had clubs in Temple street and Cumberland street.
I believe he did die, a few years ago now.
The Byrom pub known locally as 'the pie shop' was only demolished a couple of years ago and is now a car park.
In 1979 when I worked in St. John's house, St. John's Lane (along with Martin off Yo), we all piled into the pie shop one dinner time for one of the lad's 18th birthday, his name was Alan Constantine and he worked with us too, there were about 30 of us doing the building up. Anyway, the bosses got wind off someone that that's where we were when we didn't come back after the normal hour.
After spending 10 minutes insisting we all go back which fell on deaf ears he decided to join us for one and then left telling us we had 15 mins to get back. We did stroll back about half an hour later.
My mam used to go the pie shop with one of her brothers and their mam in the 1970s. It became Flash Harry's in the 1980s - complete with neon sign but lay empty throughout most of the 1990s.
Hi Ged,
you've got me wondering if I've got the right name/pub now? I remember where "Flash Harry's" is/was,but the pub I'm on about is an older building,as you can see on the attached photo. Is this this an older version of the same pub?
Ah, well that one was the Byrom Arms listed at 32-34 Byrom st and 2-4 Hunter Street so was on the opposite side to the later Byrom (pie shop) that I know.
Here is the caption from 'A pub on every corner' by Freddy O'Connor.
This photo is from 1912 when run by George Henry Allen with adjoining cocoa rooms. The pub replaced an earlier 1870s structure named Brunswick Buildings, part of which housed a spirits vaults and a wine and spirit dealer.
That side of Hunter Street was demolished in the late 60s to accommodate the Churchill Way Eastbound Flyover.
Thanks for clearing that one up Ged! Just the pub opposite the Glasshouse now
I seen this cross last Saturday and was intrigued to know what it was, good job I came on here.
