When my dad worked in the Walker Art Gallery, he managed to get a dozen or so Gerard Gardens residents into those council buildings as porters or cleaners. There's a big concertina type factory door at the top of Mill Lane which goes into the side of the Art Gallery where the massive paintings were delivered or after restoration.

The bloke who was my dad's boss when he first started in 1967 was George Kirby and he used to park his Reliant just there. I would be taken around the unseen parts of the art gallery, around the back of that big tapestry in the main foyer and up in the workers 'mess' - great times. Also they'd bring all the John Moore's exhibition stuff up in the lift to the back galleries for evening shows and the lift is disguised into one of the walls upstairs with a large painting hanging over it.

I wonder why the land on the corner, hasn't been built on? There was a pub there (latterly "Flash Harry's") which was demolished, then, as far as I can remember, the land was taken up by some type of extension to the building behind, which has also gone, leaving a car park?

The older building, now being done up as St. Patrick's Court apartments was the original Sunday school to St. Johns Church which stood in what is now St. Johns Gardens. Great pics as ever Joe, my old playground. Where the blue boards are next to it, is supposed to be the site of a new tall building (not skyscraper as such) but work on the foundations seems to have come to a halt.

Many's a time I've stood on that corner, waiting for my girlfriend to come home from the Art College. She lived in a flat on the corner of Canning Street and Catharine Street.

This was the back way into our house when we lived in Canning Street - used as a public lavatory by those staggering back from the pub late in the evening.

Just like Hockenhall Alley. A far cry from when it was inhabited by residents.

And one of the courts hidden around the back in the same year, probably the same day.

Do you mean threllies/Whitbreads as that was in my old street where I lived in the 80s - Trueman Street.

Look at your pic 2, and my pic 1 for comparison.

It would appear there was housing and a Bents brewery on Johnson St. No other Johnson street listed in Liverpool. The brewery on my 1908 map is past the dog leg of the street.

    Type in Johnson street.

And in 1936 Joe, with the Old Toll Bar pub at the end which was only demolished in the 1980s.

Another view that was better back when....
