    Default Obscure Stories of Liverpool

I've created this thread for any historical stories about Liverpool that have been largely forgotten. In the course of my research I have come accross many weird and wonderful tales which I am glad to share with you all - may are available in the LRO archives of the Mercury, Porcupine, Advertiser etc... Others pop up all over the country. You just have to have the time and patience to look.

I'll be begin with this rather charming tale of the early days of the railways.

The Derby Mercury, Wednesday, October 20, 1830; Issue 5128
    Original From the Manchester Advertiser

A woman gored to death on Bold street? Amazing stuff! And, yet again, a really nice little slice of 1Liverpool life in the 1800s.

Long before football there was another reason for the Liverpool-Manchester rivalry. Good to see that the scousers of yore could take it in a light-hearted way!

Sorry it's been a while; here are two notices which I think may be of interest:

    Liverpool Mercury

The first, as far as I can tell is about a group of Street Lamp Lighters who arrived in Leeds claiming that they were from Liverpool (and probably well thought of there). When this notice reaches Liverpool the Mercury doesn't know a thing about these Lighters. Probably means that they were con-men who duped an entire city into believing they were something they are not!

The second one is quite nice incedentally, gives a rather nice impression of Liverpool at this period.

I have a book called LIVERPOOL ODDITIES, I have to get something from there. I do remember it talks about the 1 o'clock gun which went 'off' at 1pm every weekday. (I remember this) it was because all the clockmakers, mostly ships clocks and such were all in the same area.

Yikes, I may not remember this story as well as I thought so I will get the book and copy it!!! It started in 1867 (I don't remember that)

Perhaps the second story of the last offering could be better explained by Cadfael - our resident camponologist (bell-ringer I think!)

Here are two little 'uns for today:

An Absconded Wife and some Untrustworthy Americans

    Friday, September 18, 1812 - Liverpool Mercury

One wonders if the American War of 1812 (the War of Independence - round 2 ) had anything to do with the troubles with the ship.

Looks like they had far more expansive pallets than we do today! Sorry I've lost the details to this one but it's from the early 1800s.

Also, the FIRST recorded vessel to navigate from Warrington to Dublin - must have been quite a dangerous journey given the shallowness of the river beyond Liverpool.
