It's a better example of 'Facadism' than some.
Like Mount Pleasant or Cleveland Square.
The Planning Committee wanted the facade of the Bedford cinema to be retained.

We walked down some very old stone steps. I think they were referred to as the "Monks steps" or something. The steps led us down to the river side by the Dingle.
I always thought they were blocked off, I might have a walk down/ up there soon, cheers
