The shops I remember from the 40's and 50's are the Home and Colonial, the Maypole,Costigans and Irwins. The big department store in Walton was Frosts, not as big as T.J.Hughes but as genteel as Grace Bros. I loved going to Lewis's as a child ,there were always demonstrators in the basement showing the latest inventions for domestic use. That is where I first tasted chicken noodle soup ,I must have had about six bowls full; one Saturday there was a man demonstrating a darning machine ( remember the holes you used to get in your woolly socks?) My mum was with me and she bought one saying it was a mini loom and made me darn my own socks with it. Does anyone remember the bomb site that was there before they built Lewis's? I can remember the sword swallower and the escapologist plus the mad geezer who used to have paving slabs smashed on his chest by a guy wielding a sledgehammer. They were a rough looking lot and never seemed to make much money because by the time they came round with the hat the crowds had scarpered. Used to have God botherers with sandwich boards ,marching around telling us we were all doomed. If Lowry had come to Liverpool then he would have had ample material to fill many canvasses.Bon Marche was a bit of a posh shop, as was Bunny's and how about the Wizards Den , I used to love browsing in there, bought fart powder ,exploding cigarettes and all other items that small boys made nuisances of themselves with ,especially stink bombs.

Some of you must be children! Talking about Kwik-Save and Somerfield - what about Costgans and Melias as well as Irwins of course - any memories of those?
