    Default Supermarkets / Retail History

This is another interest of mine, I wonder if anybody else has any memories they'd like to share. There must be loads of you who remember shops that have now ceased trading. Maybe some of you even have photographs...

Safeway, Rumbelows, Index, and more recently (in fact, a year ago last week) Kwik Save have all now ceased trading.

Do any of you remember Lennons supermarkets?

    I remember Lennons.
Worked for them in the early 1970s.
I was at Liscard in the former Liscard Palace cinema.
They were taken over by Gateway (now Somerfield).
Liscard is now a Shoemarket store.
Funnily enough the Aintree Palace cinema went exactly the same way and is now Shoemarket.
    Lennons were c r a p.
When the bacon went off we had wash it down with vinegar to kill the smell.
It was still unfit to eat, but we had to sell it anyway.

Somerfield has just joined retail history:

I haven't photographed a single Somerfield store, yet.

I won't be sorry to see Somerfield go.
However, the Co-op has very few stores in Liverpool these days.

What's happened to Tesco's moving into what was the Co-op's Leo/Pioneer store in Park Road?
    Latterly Mecca Bingo.

Re: Proposed Tesco, Park Rd. I heard that the Fire-Station has to be re-located (no idea where to), then the Care Centre next door will then move into the Fire-Station building. Could take a while.

There are still one or two old Kwik Save buildings around. Smithdown Road, for example still has the Kwik Save colours (store has closed down).

I took this photo because the wording appealed to me.
So, it looks like Somerfield themselves have (y)ielded.

remember Freemans on Wavertree Rd?, Taskers are in there now.

I went there regularly with my mum and visited the grotto every year. best one they had was an Alice in wonderland thing.

would love to see a pic of it again.

other department stores I remember Binns, the big Co-op in London Rd and Blacklers.

Hendersons were in Church St before Binns and had a devastating fire in the 60's
Proud Scouser, with a dabbling of Welsh and Irish.

I remember Hendersons and also when it was Binns. I used to like the food hall at the side of the building.

In the days when we had nothing we had fun.
If tomorrow starts without me, remember I was here.

My first job on leaving school was at Fine Fare in Gateacre (Gateacre Park Drive?). It opened the day after I started - May or June 1967. Worked there for three months before starting my apprenticeship at Dunlops. Had great fun!

I happen to have a book of Green Shield stamps right here!

Their main warehouse was in Earlestown (or it might have been Newton-le-Willows) and I used to go there to service their photocopier.

I remember a FF in London Road...it was a discount place like Kwik Save. I think KS took them over...but I'm not sure.
