One thing I noticed yesterday was that it seems to be a bit difficult to get to the leisure level from South John St (the one that opened in May). I didn't actually go in that street yesterday but from what I can remember there aren't any steps/lifts/escalators up. From what I gather the best you can do is using the lift by Debenhams and walk by the park and over the bridge or walking all the way round to Paradise and using the zig-zag stairs. There must be something I'm missing because it seems a little odd that it wouldn't be easier to get up there (I'm a lazy being!).

I thought that as well - hence I used the big escalator from Paradise street (no need to use those zig-zag stairs)

There is an escalator going down from by the Cafe Rouge to the 1st floor so that you can cross a bridge and then escape via Debenhams.

I agree that's it not the easiest of places to get to - oh well I'm sure we'll get used to it!

I think that i quite ambigious so I will rephrase it for people who have not been yet - there are escalators from South John Street first level to the top level outside the odeon, where the escalators from Paradise Street also go.

You can get to the escalator by walking through Keys Court in Church St,you can see the escalator just behind the zig zag staircase

Once again it looks as though the planners have demolished those features that make Liverpool unique, and replaced them with something that could be anywhere. When will they realise that if they want to attract people to the city they have to provide something they can't find elsewhere?

A part of town that know one ever visited, only passed through in a hurry? A part of town with an ugly carpark and old hotel?

I think Danensis goes back a little before your and my time Kev (definitely mine )

I know the quiant buildings, pubs and warehouses around Canning Place, Redcross Street, South Castle Street, Litherland Alley and Ogdens Weint are close to some peoples hearts like those who worked there in the 60s before the area was decimated after lying derelict. My brother worked in Mercer Court when the Brown/Picton libraries stored their books there and he said it was a great bustling little area with the likes of the Trawler pub and Flying Scotsman.

I have two views on this development...it will be interesting to see how people view my own POV

Some people from my course now work in the new shops down the Lpool 1...one of them says "Its great...its like you aren't in Liverpool anymore when your walking through Chavasse Park"

To me...there is something very wrong if we have people liking Liverpool 1 for the fact that it doesn't feel like Liverpool. I think its very wrong for people who have been born and raised in this great city of ours, to feel as if they don't fit in with the new image of the city...or whats worse...don't recognize where they are.

However...the whole concept of mass-redevelopment is quintessentially Liverpool. We like things done on a big scale...we like doing something adventurous.

It will be interesting to see how it all matures. I hope it grows old gracefully...but will this ever compare to what we have lost??? Will this ever compare to the old Customs House?? Will this ever compare to the Sailors Home???

He talks about the new Musuem of Liverpool life too which Is looking horrible and over sized doesn't fit It with whats next to It at all.

The Liverpool one was a great Idea to build but It's just big blocks of glass and brick buildings with the odd colourful tiles.

Well, the people who say this are local...the quote was actually of a lad who lives in Swanside!

Your point of the blocks of glass and brick made me chuckle a little...as I was thinking the same thing myself.

Blocks of brick and glass Is norm In the redevelopment In Liverpool now.

The council who approve these things are descendants of Cain.

Haven't seen the new phase yet, but will be visiting again in a few weeks so will have a good look then. I love the first phase, and don't quite understand why some people are not happy with it. The whole development can only be good news for Liverpool. It will definitely bring people into the city, whether tourists or residents, and that's all good news for the local economy. It must have already provided many jobs, and no doubt will continue to do so. Many of them will be part time, and so the large student population will be pleased as it should make it easier for some of them to get a job while they are studying, again good for the local economy. The whole development has got to be better than letting the city centre become run down and derelict, as so many towns and cities are these days. Liverpudlians should be proud of a City Council with so much vision and style.
    Well done Liverpool

Gone are the days when Companies made a statement of wealth when building their headquarters here such as The Royal Liver friendly assurance or when the likes of Walker or William Brown pumped money into grand civic buildings - it's all done on a tight quick build budget now with the developers making the most of it. This IS 21st Century architecture - the likes of which you may have saw pictured back in the 1970s/80s when the year 2000 was in the futuristic distant future.
