Here's an old picture from the Granby Street community cira 1960. Anybody see anyone they know / knew? I believe the pic was of a Christmas Party in one of the pubs on Stanhope Street

    Default Granby St Directory

Hello to everyone following this thread.
For the general interest of everyone, here is a street directory of Granby St from 1968. It may help with people's recollections of the shops and people that used to exist. I am the editor of 'The Jangler' the local newsletter put together by the Granby Residents Association and I would love to hear stories about the shops and the people that used to be here. We are very keen to regenerate Granby Street and would very much like to have a return to something of the vibrancy of shops that used to be here.

Re Warburtons - The owner was Harold if I remember right - he was bald and wore a beret. Apparently he went bald after suffering shellshock.
We used to love when he had a shark in we would all go after school to look. The head used to sell for about 50p I think he told me when I asked!

My Mum corrected me and said that he actually just suffered alopaecia from an early age. She says he had no eyelashes or eyebows too. She too remembers the tuna event!

The false teeth shop you mentioned was a dental repair shop. Dave had that shop it was just by Granby Street school. The kids used to take any injured pigeons to him and he looked after them till they were ok to fly.

The lady who had the fish shop was called Phyllis, she had a mynah bird that used to talk.

Well folks, let's add a little colour (ok black & white) to the proceedings. Here's some of the shops you all mention (Teeth repairers/Laundry/Goodalls/Barbers/Warburtons). Others to follow if you like them. All taken 20/6/1968 by Harry Ainscough and held by the LRO. What a thriving thoroughfare it was compared to how it is sadly these days.

No probs. Just in case it's not commonly known, you have to use the scroll bar at the bottom of my post to see the full photo.

    Cheers,
