LATE night radio listeners were shocked when a caller died while on air.

DJ Pete Price was conducting his nightly phone-in on Radio City when one of the lines went dead in mid-conversation.

The phone was engaged when Pete tried to call back and neighbours of the well-known caller rang in to report that lights were still blazing inside the house.

The worried DJ contacted police but says he was told the incident was not a priority.

So, with hundreds of listeners frantically calling for news Pete pulled the plug on his show and rushed down to the house in Old Swan.

When he arrived just before midnight an ambulance was already outside the address in Derwent Road West.

The 60-year-old man was confirmed dead after having suffered a heart attack and found slumped in his armchair.

Pete said: "I just had a gut feeling that something was terribly wrong. I was absolutely devastated and phoned the police.

"I announced to the listeners afterwards that he had died and we just played music for the rest of the show.

"I understand that police have to prioritise incidents, but I don't know why they couldn't have sent one policeman down to check.

"Instead, the police wouldn't go, but the DJ went instead."

A Merseyside police spokeperson said today the matter was being investigated by the Professional Standards Department.

She said: "Our sympathies go out to this gentleman's family.

"A full investigation of the evening's events is under way. It will look at the call made to police and the response to it."

Pete added: "He was a very opinionated bloke who called my show often. But he was good fun on air with some very fiery views."

Don't like Price but credit to him for what he did.

Wonder why Pete and his coffee morning regulars only knew him as Terry when they knew where he lived and Terry even went to his coffee mornings?

What about the guys family? Seems all we know is what Price is telling us.

From what I read all they had to say about Terry is he was bigot and died what he loved doing on Price's website anyway so I thought they knew him well.

Nice to see they have a clear set of rules on there now Howie A couple of years ago it was nuts on there, not a very nice place.
