Every one of those flats in Old Swan,have now gone! I think the main reason is, that they did,outlive their usefulness, but there are still plenty of apartments!?
Examples of tenements still in existence.
Nelson Street flats.
Gt Richmond St flats.
St Andrews Gardens - in part as student accommodation.
Wavertree Gardens - as Abbeygate Apartments.
Myrtle Gardens - in part, as Minster Court.
Sussex Gardens - in part as Acorn Apartments.
Portland Gardens - in part as sheltered accommodation.
Blackhorse Lane flats.
Adshead Road flats.
Muirhead Avenue flats.
These ones spring to mind.
I'm sure with high rise city centre living back in vogue - as plans and ideas change in a cycle, a lot more of these could have been saved, even if scaled down. For instance, we could have lost Gerard Crescent and the 4 blocks that lay behind and still kept Gerard Gardens, just as the Bullring was kept but the ancillary blocks on Bronte st and Trowbridge street were lost (even if modern day replacements were built in that case) This still would have left room for garden houses alongside.
Still, there is no doubting the value of these tenements to the 1920s/30s living slum dweller.
I used to live in Hurst Gardens in the 70s. Tenements were great communities.
Not quite the same thing,but people queued up overnight,to buy an ex-council flat,in the towerblocks on Netherfield rd,the other year! And yet,many say they should have been demolished,along with most of the others !?Quote:
