I think they were also the first police force in England to use CS Gas and Rubber Bullets on their fellow citizens.
Has anyone any idea why the copper on the left of the image is wearing a white helmet.

Not me DP, well spotted.
I was initially drawn to the story of the two poor guys they had arrested.
Especially the blooded one, probably met Mr Truncheon.
I wonder what they'd done to deserve that eh?

The white helmet was usually made of compressed staw and used in the summer months as far as I understand from various sources.
