CHILDREN from Toxteth will create a community museum for one day to celebrate Capital of Culture.

The Great L8 project will give youngsters the opportunity to mark Liverpool’s culture status by celebrating their area.

Youngsters from Toxteth Educational Trust (TET) have chosen their own roles within the museum, ranging from security and information staff to tour guides and curators. They are being helped by local artists.

The children have been collecting memorabilia from people living in their area, finding out about famous local people and creating displays.

They hope to show visitors different cultures and lifestyles within the area in the one-day museum tomorrow.

The project is being run by the centre and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), using Aimhigher funding.

Jan Gibbons, Aimhigher project coordinator for parents at LJMU, said: “Liverpool 8 has a rich history and we want the children to explore what’s important to them in their local community and to consider what Liverpool 8 is famous for.

“We want them to feel they’ve helped to organise an event for 2008 and know that they had a hand in further developing its culture.”

TET project worker Lisa Mayers, who has spent the last few weeks helping to bring the project together, said: “We’re delighted to offer the kids the chance to use their own voice to show why L8 is important.”

The Great L8 museum will be open to the public with free admission from noon to 2.30pm tomorrow at John Archer Hall, Upper Hill Street, Toxteth.

Scouse power

A FREE fun day celebrating all things Scouse is planned for Runcorn.
The event will take place at the Castlefields Community Centre on Saturday, from 2-4pm.

It will include live music with a Liverpool flavour, traditional Scouse food, fairground stalls, arts and crafts, film screenings and face painting.
