"St James became redundant in 1974, "
My cousin was one of the last to be married there. Friends of mine helped out painting the place.
"and was vested into the care of the Churches Conservation Trust in 1976. It may have become redundant because of plans to construct Junction 1 of the M62 motorway on the site."
Pull it down to make a motorway junction!! Those people must have had brain damage.
I need to have a nose up the tower at some point! Never been in that church yet!
I donated the domain name and have waived the annual hosting fees. I just wish I could contribute more.
There were plans to turn it into flats in the 1980s.
The building is not being left to rot. It has been substantially repaired a, replastered, rewired, reglazed, roof fixed etc. It's sad that it had to close and then was severely vandalised by the locals. So there was extensive internal damage only part of which has been repaired. Of course if people had continued to use it as a church, there would have been no need to close the building with the conseqent need to now find other uses such as a mosque.
Thanks for the pics Taffy:PDT_Piratz_26:
such a beautiful interior.
Thanks for pics :)
Does anyone have a contact for the church - when it is next open and the like? I did contact one of the bods via their e-mail address which was posted on a previous posting but no reply as such.
A crime to let this go to waste and a crime to turn it in to anything else other than its purpose.
I did hear half-a-milion Pounds was spent repairing this this church a few years ago. I wonder when all the clocks will be returned?
This building is usually on the Heritage Open Day list...Sept or Oct usually?
got a reply from Helen Swift today.
She sent a form to fill in, and said there should be an open day soon.
Will let you all know!
Updated my www.cobblers.moonfruit.com to show St James - thanks to Taffy for the pictures!!!
Jon mate, I see you're using some of my 1999 and 2003 Welsh Presbyterian Church pics on the Toxteth page of your excellent site. No probs Jon, but I need a credit and a link. Thankshttp://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/ima...ons/icon14.gif

DP's David Charters will be running a story on St James' Church regarding the baptisms of the black population of Liverpool. Not sure when the story will be run, but he'll be doing the interviewing in Robin Riley's house on the 18th. I'll be around when the interviews are carried out, so I'll ask him when I'm up there:PDT11
Taffy, nice one mate. I'll pass on this info to the ladies he'll be interviewing. I can't recall one of the ladies' names, but she wrote a treatise on the black population of Liverpool. I'll also ask Bob who is on the building commitee at St George's Church if he could find out some info. I used to know the vicar in St George's, but he's moved on and I haven't met the new lady vicar yet.:PDT_Aliboronz_11:
