Brilliant pics :PDT11
My mum remembers the no 10 when she lived on Prescott Road.
Yes, i remember it like that - Great pics :handclap:
On the 1st pic, there is a woman legging it across the road,
and on the 2nd pic there is a fella legging it too
There seems to be more traffic than people !!!!!
Jacky :)
I remember it being so busy like that with the traffic. I can remember getting off the bus somewhere by Woolworths - I think there was a stop by there.
I'm wondering what year WH.Smith opened in Church st ?? There is a Stylo shoe shop there on that photo - and I can't remember it.
I presume the pic was taken in very early 1970s.
I worked in WH.Smith from 1977'ish
WH.Smith was where Coopers was.
great photo's,
my abiding memory when I was little of going to town with my Mum is the noise of the bus brakes, now I can understand why looking at all that traffic !
sometimes when I'm in a different town or city and I hear those bus brakes it takes me right back to being 5 years old holding my Mum's hand in town.
Linda
Glad i brought back some memories!
I remember crossing the road outside woolies with a poiceman there in his little box directing the traffic!
The bus brakes screeching were always a feature of Church St/Lord St... It got worse when Church St was pedestrianised and the buses went along Whitechapel , everyone running across the road in front of them outside Mothercare , anyone remember the Crosville bus that ended up in a shop front somewhere round where Wade Smith is now.
Rob
Crosville bus's seemed to be totally different to 'Normal' bus's, and I don't just mean the shape and style. I am sure that they had the loudest brakes too.
Not only that but they could take you to far away places that a normal bus just couldn't.
Great pics there MTT. Check these out too.

Many thanks

Yes, the couple who run 20th Century Images have an unbelievable archive of glass plate negatives from Ellis Mann and other vanished photographic companies, all available as reasonably priced prints. Liverpool, Wirral, Chester, transport, work, all sorts of fascinating stuff and the quality is unsurpassed. A mooch around their 'Reflections' website is highly recommended-

They used to live up here but inherited property in Hastings and run the business from there now.
the buildings were known as "coopers buildings" as long as I ever knew, they were hit in the war by bomb damage, an old tutor of mine at tech was an apprentice assigned to fix up ther bomb damage
Wish Church Street was still like that, I could cycle through It easier then.
Yes some very vivid memories of Coopers walking around with me Dad as a kid in the sixties mmmmm ... the coffee smells and all the german sausages!

Not sure whether I`ve posted this before but some members might not have seen it. On the left is Hendersons store which had a massive fire.
Taken at Xmas time in the 1960`s
Ah, the Tatler. Used to go in there with mates but several strange individuals used to frequent the place and you had to keep a tight hold on your nuts!
Yes, that's right. Not certain, but i think they changed the name when they moved south. They're very amenable so if you're looking for specific material, don't hesitate to contact them. They'd be the first to admit that only a small fraction of their collection has made it to their fab website yet.
hi can anyone help,
john(zappa) and i were trying to figure out when church street became pedestrianised, we can both remember trying to cross a hectic lord street in the late 80's but are at a loss when it comes to church street.
