Anybody remember this? A young man aged about 18/19 was convicted and I think sent to Broadmoor.
Lesley Hobbs was the girl Killed. Early 1960's
Last house by the Railway Bridge.
Wasn't there a thread on this? I sure I remember reading something on Yo.
Hello burkhilly
Yes it's familiar to me as well. I tried to search for it but unfortunately there are too many threads and posts about local murders... which says something too, I am afraid.
C
I lived near there as a kid ( in the 70's ) everyone knew about it.
The young girl was buried in All Saints Church.
As kids we would go along and tidy the grave, put flowers on. A lot of kids did.
Yes it was indeed Lesley Hobbs 12 years who was battered to death with a standard ash tray and stabbed in the lounge of her house in 1962. The house is the last on the left as you go down Childwall Valley Road and before the railway bridge (long extension on the side of the house). She had been babysitting her 3 siblings whilst here mother and father had gone out one sunday evening. Over 500 officers were brought in including for the first time, officers from as far away as the west midlands. The Killer was 15 years from Craighurst Road on the Belle Vale estate off Hartsbourne Avenue. Throughout his remand he was held at Walton prison. He was convicted of Manslaughter and not Murder.

I remember the date on her headstone was 8th or 9th December.
On the bottom it reads " Suffer Little Children To Come Onto Me "
Not been there in over 25 years but it has always stuck with me.
It was thought that both this killing and the murder of Maureen Dutton (The Tki murder) less than a year earlier may have been connected due to the houses and their proximity to the Liverpool Loopline.
How do you kill somone with a slipper?

Thank you to everybody for your response, I did not expect to hear anything so quickly.
I did not realise she had only been 12 years old, what a terrible thing.
But I am sure Rix was older than 15, he was a year older than me and I had already left school and started work.
My reason for raising the subject I have to be honest was pure curiosity, I had known Rix a few years before this happened and now could not find any record on the internet or anywhere.
As I said I seem to remember that he was sent to Broadmoor, so presumably was found to be insane. And by now has no doubt been free for many years.
So thank you again to everybody for your help, R.I.P. Lesley Hobbs, and Rix if you are not already in hell - well God speed.
Have looked at the National Archives and am obviously wrong about the dates and his age.
Diminished responsibility? Well to do something like that .....but he seemed sane enough to me and others who knew him.
Tell us more NR. What happened to him afterwards? He was caught by good old fashioned detective work by officers doing door to door enquiries.
Heh,but its not viewable till 2049...so how did you manage to have a butchers?Quote:
Have looked at the National Archives
What happened to him afterwards? not a clue chum sorry, I would be interested to know myself.
I knew him a few years before and he thought of himself as a hardcase, but didn't impress anyone else as one.
Last time I remember seeing him was in the Avenue picture house in Edge Hill, he was sat sprawled across about 3 seats and coming across as a bit aggressive/truculent. He didn't seem to recognise me so I didn't crack on. That must have been within a year of the murder.

No I meant looked at what shows on the link. (Ref the National Archives)
Sorry I am new on here and not the most computer literate person in the world.
It was a terrible crime and I could never find a motive for it. With him being so young and information stops short. He was caught quite quickly and put through the courts and dealt with. End of.

look at this
A ITN news clip.
Notice the date 11th December. Not September as the National Archives have put on their site. I was right. I always have remembered seeing that date.
Plain clothes policeman and woman go to door of house...That was where I lived..OMG our House on the telly.
Thanks for your memories and the footage Spike. I must go and see her grave.
This killing was all but forgotton until now maybe. There wasnt much on the net anyway.
The tall detective in the white mac at the end of the clip looks to me like William Prendergast who
was the author of the first Z cars books and an adviser on the show. Its also interesting to me
that the house extension was being built during the killing.

Yes BH, I mentioned it on the Maureen Dutton (Tiki Murder) a couple of years back.
Text from Tom Slemen's account of it
''strange creature was walking across the field in the moonlight. It looked just like Pan, the old God of music and mischief. It had curved horns like a ram, hairy cloven legs from the knees down, and it was playing reed flutes. ''
By your own admittance Spike, you lived around those parts back then. Why didn't you tell me you could play the reed flutes, you could have been in our band.
If you go to the church. go to the left hand side about 3/4 way down the graveyard. Its somewhere in that area. Its a few headstones from the wall of the field next door. If I remember its a dark headstone.

I was always on that field...Just not born in 1962 like you, you old git :unibrow:
And thats the church by the Abbey pub right?
Another feature of this case is that one of the Detectives who worked on it was the childs uncle.
From the above ITN newsreel.

Yes.
Straight through the gate. Go to left of Church. Straight down about 3/4 way and look near the wall of the field. You will find it.

You know what even after 25 odd years I could walk straight to it.
I must go along again too.
I wonder why TS has got it down as an 'unexplained mystery' ?
Can I hazard a guess that the murderer knew the victim and seeing as she was in on her own babysitting, tried his hand and got the knockback maybe. Did anything ever come out in court as to the reason and why it was only manslaughter?
probaly lawers got him Manslaughter?
Ive only got the stories of kids so most will be far fetched. He lived a few minutes walk from her house so he may have known her?
Need to look in the Echo from that time.

Ged The next tour we must go along there.
Yes indeed, in fact, I'm up that way every weekend as my middle daughter's boyfriend lives off Childwall Road by the fiveways which isn't far. The Echo microfische reels are still obtainable although the LRO is temporarily closed. They are stored in the Museum for perusal now.
If your going up then ring me and I will show you where it is.

Just thought on this. There will be family members still out there. This will still be upsetting to them. I know we will all think about what we post here so as not to cause any distress to any family who may read this thread.
No motive in the Echo. Ive done em! I'll have another read of my clippings. Why it was all suppressed is a mystery to me and why it was dealt with the way it was by the lawyers should be explained sometime.
Yes, I hope if any family come across this, they know we are thinking of Lesley in all of this.
