Did anyone see the article in tonight's "Echo" about the conversion of a former seaman's orphanage in Myrtle st. behind the Philharmonic Hall,into apartments,etc? It's just that I've never heard of it before,and wondered if anyone on here,knew anything of it's history? Looking at the pic's in the article, I thought it looked very similar to the one in Newsham park,so maybe there's some connection?! :nod:

There was a boys and girls Orphanage on Myrtle street and it's attached church of the holy innocents. It was all demolished in the early 30s for the building of Myrtle Gardens, Orphan st is still there. Pics on my site I think though i've a backlog. There are also gravestones in St James Cemetery (the pit behind the Anglican Cathedral) dedicated to the youngsters who died there. I think i've posted those up here sometime.

It would appear that the building still standing was part of or an annex to the ones demolished Steve. I think I have a pic or 2 of the ones that were demolished.

Thanks Ged,great pic's,wherever they're from! They look a similar style to the building that's there now,so you are probably right!:nod: I've looked at those memorials,a few times,but now I know where they're from!
Cheers Steve. These graves are right next to one from the Bluecoat School. Just as you go down the grave lined tunnel into the cemetery and keep right, at the foot of the Cathedral really.
