Past or present?
Both, please! :)
I've got a few of Dingle which are no longer standing.
Here's one I snapped this evening.
It's in a little road opposite the Slaughterhouse.
I accidentally deleted my pic of the slaughter house!
Ah well I can get a new improved on my new cam.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
I plan to go out and do some tomorrow anyway.
I got a few Liverpool Pubs yesterday, Three of them worse for wear, and one of them in the finest bit of health...

King Edward Pub, Roberts Street Hard to think that this pub is worth £3m! I used to think that this pub should be conserved, but looking at it now, It has no real merit about it and the land could be used for something like a nice tower block. Having said that, the location isn't exactly ideal. You have two major roads surrounding two sides of the site, and the nearest bus service is varibly in-frequent. Tricky one really!

The Eldonian?, Vauxhall Road/Eldon St, Vauxhall Hard to think that this and many pubs alike were once the centre of the community. Just shows how things change over time ay? Actually, this pub still has most of it's fixtures and fittings left in it; I could see it all through the un-drawn window as I walked past!
EDIT: This pub is (or was) called "The Glass House" as seen on Page 2 of the "How Liverpool used to be" thread.

Pub on Mere Lane/Heyworth Street, Everton I must confess that I have fogotten the title of this pub which stands in the shadow of Everton Library! But what a nice looking pub this is! All that mock-tudor detail looks great on this building and is something which would be greatly missed if anything were to happen to it.

The Granton Pub, Granton Street/Breckfield Road, Breckfield I bet there were many a laugh in here once! But I think that the bottom image sums up what devistation this part of the city has endured. Breckfield was once a thriving community with a real community spirit. Now, estates surround one side of Breckfield Road, whilst on t'other side, terraces are derelict and waiting to be pulled down. I think that Breckfield Regeneration need to look at themselves and think about what they are doing. I think that they are going about this in the wrong way. It isn't the terraces that need demolishing, it's the estates. True, the terraces need a bit of tidy-ing up, but demolision isn't the answer. They aren't doing this area any favours by demolising swathes of streets that are now derelict. If anything, they are putting Breckfield at a larger disadvantage.
On that note, I will get me coat!
The Mock Tudor one is the Mere Bank, quite nice inside.
Great pics...
My boyfriend Phil took this of The Mayfair?? on Stanhope Street last week...
I very rarely stay in a pub for more than 2 pints and love crawls round old traidtional pubs. Went down Vauxhall Road after a match recently, must have taken in 6 or 7 pubs and ended up in the Vauxhall Vaults on Vauxhall Road near Tithebarn St. About ten years ago I did a Scottie Road crawl, there nust have been 9 or 10 pubs then but sadly only 3 are left.
It used to be The Angel.
Here it is in toxteth.net.
More of my 1980s pics there.

Another one of my 'very rare pics' :celb (23):
A Public House on Highgate Street, Edge Hill (this is behind Mason Street) taken in 1914. If anyone can tell me the name of the pub then a Gold star - and no..I don't know myself :)
Re: The Angel, Stanhope street
I keep meaning to photograph all the heads surrounding that building, some look so miserable. Any info on who they depict?
hey
i was just consulting freddy o connor's book pub on every corner volume 2:south liverpool, and come across a pub on highgate street.
it was called the bricklayers arms when it was pulled down. (page 53)
it is under the heading Beer House, and closed in 1919....
could be?
Hi all
Could anyone get a picture of the Saddle pub. I believe it is on Fountains Road, Liverpool 4. This is the pub where, in the first story told about the origins of the Maybrick Diary, Mike Barrett said that he had received the document from his drinking buddy, Tony Devereaux, a typesetter at the Echo. In that first story, his wife Anne and Mike himself claimed they knew nothing about the Diary before the handover in the pub.
Anne, who now calls herself by her maiden name, Anne Graham, is now claiming she in fact gave the Diary to Tony to give to Mike, certainly a strange scenario, and the Diary had been in her family since 1950 or before. Although note that this claim does not make it old and nor does it make it authentic.
The latest news is that Mr. Barrett is going to be at the upcoming May 2007 Maybrick Trial at the Liverpool Cricket Club in Aigburth and threatens to "to tell the full and truthful story of how he came into possession of the diary and how the pressure of the world's media affected his health. He is also prepared to answer questions from the audience" according to event organizer Chris Jones.
All the best
Chris
Will see what I can do, but I wonder if it will still be there or not seeing as Fountains Road has pretty much been obliterated by estates. But, I will try and have a look for you this week. If not, it will be next weekend!
Hope that I can find it for you!
All the best
Russ

South Hill Road / Dingle Mount.
June 1992.
I always meant to put this photo on toxteth.net, but could never find it, so I settled for a more distant view.
It was always difficult to tell if the pub was open or not, and I used to walk the dog round that area most days.
Like other parts of Liverpool, this pub was left standing while the neighbourhood was rebuilt, and I loved this block.
But, unfortunately, it has now been demolished.
And I never did go inside.
What a shame, Philip, both that you weren't able to go inside and that the building has been demolished. From the architecture it looks as if it could have been an earlier nineteenth century building unlike some of the later Victorian pubs common in Toxteth and elsewhere in Liverpool. :disgust:
Chris
Here's a little history of the building (wot I wrote for toxteth.net).
This pub was originally part of a small terrace of three houses, built some time after 1835, as a map of that date shows two other terraces on South Hill Road, nearer Park Road, with a much smaller building on the site of this pub. The terrace is shown as three houses on the 1847 OS map. Later in the 19th century the Dingle Mount corner was extended to become a public house. In the late 20th century it was one of the few remaining Victorian buildings in the area. It was demolished in 2002 (August?). The site is now grassed over with a Mosaic Cross inserted.
Note the now demolished church of St Finbar to the right.
Paradise Street.
Great little pub this, has a certain charm
Ye Olde House at Home and The Travellers Rest, Aigburth Vale. It's quite rare to find two pubs together nowadays. These have recently been refurbished and are now private dwellings, looking similar to the surrounding houses.
Hi Steve
Many thanks for confirming that the Saddle Inn, Fountains Road, Anfield, is still there.
I misspoke earlier when I said the original handover of the Maybrick Diary between Tony Devereux and Mike Barrett took place there. The two of them did know each other from drinking together at the Saddle but that is not how the story of Mike's acquisition of the Diary was originally told.
Checking Shirley Harrison's 1993 Hyperion edition of The Diary of Jack the Ripper, p. 4, she says that it was after Devereux fractured his hip "around Christmas 1991" and Mike would call round to do shopping and other chores for Tony, that the handover took place:
"One day, a few months later, when he arrived at Tony's house there was a parcel wrapped in brown paper on the table.
"'Take it. I want you to have it. Do something with it,' was all Tony said."
The rest, as they say, is history.
