George and Douglas
My grandfather and my uncle labored
in their separate gardens
until the end of their days.
Bitterness had come between father
and son, strong words best left
unspoken. They both knew
how to plant and nurture
chrysanthemums and begonias,
but they could never mend that
broken bridge nor clear
that overgrown path.
