The one o`clock gun
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3128/...bae2b167_o.jpg
Came across this on a walk around the Birkenhead docks. It was fired at one o`clock every day from the waterfront at the Morpeth Dock to enable people to put their clocks and watches right, Started in 1867 and finished 1969.
There was a move to stop it in 1932 due to the operating costs about ?100 per year, and people having radios, but it was kept going. It was also fired to herald in the twentieth century.

I'm not a 100% certain but I think it started out on that sight but was later moved to Bidston hill and fired electronicaly?

One o' clock gun
I can well remember it in the 30's. I was only 12 at the time and it's a
surprise to me that it was threatened with closure. But I'm not surprised that it
managed to survive because it was an established feature of our daily lives.
I assume that it could be heard all over the city - it certainly came in loud and
clear in Kirkdale. I was very impressed by the fact that it was fired from"over
the water" though I was not too sure where Bidston was!
