Chancery Building Paradise Street
Does anyone know what this building was built to house?
It is at no. 96 Paradise Street on the same side as the new bus station and is part of a group including Casartelli's; Church House (formerly a Seaman's Mission and Temperance Pub) at the corner of Hanover and Paradise Streets; No. 12 Hanover Street (formerly warehouse); the Seaman's Mission (demolished and built over)
Chancery House/Gordon Smith Institute for Seamen.
96 Paradise Street was built 1899 as the Gordon Smith Institute for Seamen, with library, reading room and assembly hall for sailors ashore.
(Founded 12 September 1820 as the Liverpool Seamen's Friend Society by Non Conformists.)
The Institute closed in the 1960s and was converted into offices in 1980-2, which is probably when it was called Chancery House.
Ged, my monitor is as you describe it. :PDT11
I'll investigate it later.
