40135 was numbered 97406 by this time (23/12/85). Suspect the 31 on the rerailing train is 31275 and the date is 4th April 1986.

I remember that train well, 6T73 or "target 73" as it was known, a local trip engine that worked the vans from Edge Hill Gullet to Aintree Metal Box Siding. It also used to take in exotic locations like Fazakerly Sleeper Depot, Alexandra Dock, Seaforth Freightliner Terminal and even Aintree Freightliner Terminal on occasions. Worked it many times when I was a young Driver's Assistant.
I can recall the derailment at Aintree but I don't remember who the Train Crew were at the time.
40135 had indeed been renumbered as 97406 by then, I used to get on it quite a lot, it was in a bit of a state by this time and, if I recall, was withdrawn not long after that photograph was taken.
Those were the days!

Know what I've never noticed in that pic of mine before just now . That class 31 in the background going or coming from Fazakerley!!

If you follow the line behind the train it curves around past the old Aintree Steam Shed to a junction called Sefton Junction. Here the line from Fazakerly joined from the left.
The class 31 in the distance is on the branch to the sleeper depot.

Although Sefton Jct - Fazakerley closed back in 1988, the line from Bootle to Aintree still sees occasional use. The pic on the left shows 37410 on a road learning jolly on 25th July 2007 for forthcoming engineering work at Town Green. The pic on the right is 60029 at Orrell Road on 3rd August 2007 working 6L95 Town Green - Crewe Basford Hall.
