This is the old Princes half tide dock gates,in a bad state now but I wonder how many ships they let pass, both steam and sail
A great pic GD but a sad state. Thanks for sharing I wouldn't have a clue where these are....
As always, great photos, many thanks.

The remnants of the old cattle pier by the tunnel vents in Birkenhead where sheep and cattle were unloaded from the cattleboats from Ireland to be taken to the abattoir
There is a story I heared of a couple of lads working on the vents removing a couple of planks from the pier and every time sheep walked across there always a couple missing by the time they reached their destination. The lads were eventually found out.
Excellent pic and a nice story to go with it Joe, cheers :)
Thought I'd add to this thread having had a few photo expeditions over the last few days....

The Clarence Graving dock gates a bit rickety but I walked over them stepping over the gap in the middle
Only a few years ago those graving docks had ships in them being descaled and repaired.
that might be why ships stopped using it because of the gates being old and batterd. i think the last ship to use them was the daniel adamson which is further in the dock system in wellington or sandon dock next to the waste treatment plant

The old Prince`s dock enrance with the original wooden gate still there but not in use. You can see the channel where it slotted in,and also the small door where the gate man was stationed.
