Whyisn't that as know as the Cavern then outside of Liverpool?
Thats one of my favourite pubs that. Yeah for the Jac!!
Don't get out much now (sigh!) but pre kids and marriage and stuff - way back in the 70s/80s we used to go the Jacaranda sometimes. We used to go a club in Bold Street called the Odd Spot as well. Do any really very elderly people remember going to Eric's - Pete Burns used to go and he was really big and terrifying(!). There was a girl who used to use a kettle for a handbag....ahh punk rock..
See www.liverpoolthen.co.uk (currently under construction) when it's back up-and-running.Quote:

I remember that shop well - used to go in of a dinner hour and look at the records - they used to sell stuff from the States (Stax) Otis and Aretha, Eddie Floyd - and you had to but little plastic middles to be able to play them (anyone who has owned vinyl will know what I mean) - I think Pete Burns worked there are one time. I never went the club though - used to go the Sportsman to see Supercharge (I knew she was a lady cos she moved the dishes first - one of their songs). And later on towards the end of the 70s we used to go to Tiffany's during our dinner and have a dance and a lager - they used to play good funk...can't drink and work now can ya?
Yeah, I used to get my Soul records in Probe ... stuff like Eddie Floyd, Aretha, etc, as you say. :) I was only ever into black music, Soul, funk, Motown, reggae. We would go to clubs which specialised in this music. ie; the Victoriana, the Mardi-gras, the Timepiece. Going back a really long time ... do you remember the 'All Fours' club in Eberle st (off Dale st) ?
The other place we would go to see live bands was 'Reeces' in Parker st.
I saw Edwin Star there.
OMG ! We done some good dancing in those days ! Proper 'Soul' steps from America .. usually with a James Brown influence ! :)

... and ... yes, I remember the plastic middles for the singles records. I've still got lots of them gathering dust somewhere. Had lots of Otis ones like that. :)
Otis ................ phew !! say no more !! :unibrow: What a voice! Pure Soul.
Sorry, I'm getting carried away here ... Sweetpatooti you started me on a fave subject !
aaahh Otis:) I love all that old 60s Soul - loads of atmosphere. Remember Carla Thomas - she was great she did Tramp with Otis:) Albie Donnelly - I had forgot his name - big beard and baldy head. Those were the days - we have led parallel lives lindylou!!!
I saw Carla Thomas on the Empire.
... it just came to me in a flash ... it was called 'Bucks Place' :)Quote:

Well that brought back memories - he doesn't look much older does he?? Wish I could say the same for myself:sad: Carla Thomas on the Empire - I didn't see that one - I went to see the Jackson 5 in the early 70s - paid top dollar for the best seats (£1.75!!!) and when they came on stage the crowd were running over the back of the seats to get to the front - ended up at the back after being trampled on - footprints all over me good flares. A hard lesson was learned about going to gigs - don't bother paying top dollar - just learn to run quicker.:unibrow:
great stuff, nice find :PDT11

Gladys Knight & the Pips I saw on the Southport theatre. Edwin Star at Reeces (Parker st).
..... Reeces - now that really is giving my age away :unibrow:
Yeh - concerts were affordable in those days - even if you had to save all your pocket money for months - queue up in the rain (sag off school first) - and you'd be made up bragging to all your mates! I can't afford to go to concerts now - need a second mortgage. There's nobody like the Temps or Tops anymore anyway - nobody worth seeing. It's better to go to small venues and see up and coming stuff. Or stay in....aaahh poor me!
I've got a vague memory I think sometime in the early/mid 80s of the Jac being a bit of a squat club with corrugated steel sheeting across the door that
you had to move out of the way to get in? Don't know for sure so does anyone remember this or have I hallucinated it? :celb (6):
In the 50's the Jac was a fair venue, hard rockin' and lots
of chicks. (a squat bar????)
Not official - they'd broken in and
taken over it and (this is really so vague - I blame the beer) they sold cans of lager downstairs. I'm sure I've got the right place - it was when Slater
st. only really had the Marlbourough on it and was very run down.
Not sure - failing memory...
Slater St.
sounds right, tho. the Marlborough must have been long after me.:celb (6):
Well there you go - I thought the Marlborough Hotel had always been there on the corner with Seel st. facing what is now Slaters bar. Maybe it
was called something else?
Could be memory problems for me, probably a place of little interest for us. I can only think clearly on my hog.:)
Oh, come on now Watergate, you must have liked 'The Gay Cav'. Quite select at one time.:celb (23):
