Thanks for the photos Mike.
A couple of years back there were a couple of yellow Merseyrail painted class 73's parked at Birkenhead North depot. They were looking a bit neglected. Any idea what they were used for (I'm assuming general maintenance/permanent way) or where they went (again, I'm assuming they were cut up)?
Cheers.
EDIT: Googled it...
WikipediaQuote:
Merseyrail formerly had four Class 73 electro-diesel locomotives for shunting, sandite trains, engineering works and other departmental duties; two of these had been repainted in the yellow livery of the previous franchise holder. These locomotives were sold to a preservation company in 2002
thats right they where for maintaince, used to see them at hall road, crosby, and kirkdale,
usually they where saw out during the winter times when the "sandite" trains ran to de ice the track,
theres a pic of one here sandwiched between an old class 501 unit for diicing at kirkdale in the late 90s
http://mark5811.fotopic.net/p31952764.html
no most of them got saved and preserved some are on the severn valley railway steam railway and keighly and worth valley railway, been painted back in there old liveries, one did get scrapped but for spares for the other ones
this is the one that got scrapped, used to see in a corner of kirkdale for years

one at birkenhead

and here are some ones that got saved and are now run on preserved steam railways

Excellent, thanks very much!
wow - what excellent links :handclap::PDT11
no probs snappel
to be honest i like the old steam the best,
another bit of liverpool history, the last ever british rail, mainline steam train ran from liverpool lime street in august 1968, the fifteen guinea special,
anyone who wants to see what it was like to drive and fire them, should have a look at this, proper mans job, the same type of engine that was used on the special and where a common site in liverpool up to 1968
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rXVhefeMMc
i know an old driver of them, who used to be at bank hall, and edge hill sheds and am always asking him questions about them
mike
my fave pic on that site is this one, a "scot" loco leaving liverpool exchange in the mid 1960s, these are the arches you can still see from the train now, between sandhills and moorfields, theres a row of railway vans in the background on the line that is used now between moorfields and sandhills, and can see the liver buildings in the top left corner

he took one looking the other way aswel, looking towards sandhills, can see the big tobbacco warehouse in the background

and one of my local station orrell park, a "black 5" loco on the front of this train heading towards ormskirk, this is when you could travel from liverpool exchange to preston/glasgow

@mikedelamar
I can see why that picture is your favourite, it captures everything from Liverpools grimy north central dock area, the steam era and in colour too.
You also can't help wondering if it was normal in the 60s to park your cars in the middle of the road or are those two cars bottom-left about to collide head on!!!
couple of now and then pics, the "now" ones i took myself around 1998 the "then" pics are from railway magazines
aintree on grand national day , the bridge over the top is bull lane, orrell park, this train is heading towards aintree central station which is now gone, used to be around the sight of the new littlewoods, vernons on park lane aintree, this pic is 1961. this part of the line has now been made into a cycle path to halewood.

and walton on the hill tunnels the original pic taken in the 1930s looking towards walton on the hill station,
the modern one took by me in the same spot, you can just see the top of the tunnel above all the rubbish, on the top left of the cutting is the petrol station on brewster street, i am standing inside one tunnel as im taking this pic, there where actually 3 tunnels along this line, with short openings, one end is kirkdale station, the other is under walton hall avenue flyover.
i walked along the platform at kirkdale station and in to the tunnel to get this pic

@Mike.
I would love to see some older pictures of Edge Hill Station. I can never find any. I do have some footage of it on video but only fleeting glimpses.
I thinks its strange that with this being on the West Coast mainline into Lime Street ,and also at the foot of the famous Grid Iron, and with the carriage cleaning and freight storage sidings, that there isn't a whole ton of photos of this scene.
You wouldn't believe that Edge Hill once had a station canopy.
It's sad that there's so little left...
not a problem sir :)
1950s when the station still has the canopies, and the large goods warehouse on the right
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e9...96edgehill.jpg
got a few more of edge hill somewhere, ill ave to dig em out

Wow!
Will you just look at them! They are amazing!!! What a scene!
Cheers for that Mike, thats just made my day! :handclap:
I never knew that good shed existed, though the entrance to it is on the corner of Tunnel Road and Wavertree Road isn't it.
Cool!
yeah theres superstores there now
can see the grid iron railway lines in this pic

The photos are absolutely wonderful.
And this is coming from someone who doesn't know much about trains and railways.
If you'd like to add the photos to "Old Liverpool" (see link below), please, PLEASE, do so.
Thank you.
yeah, but only thing is that they aint mine, copyright and all that
mike
edge hill was such a complicated area for railways, so have to bare with us here

blasting out into edge hill station from lime street in the early 50s
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e9..._edge_hill.jpg
edge hill station in the 1960s, this jinty tank engine is about to push this train of vans up to the top of the gridiron. smoke is billowing out of waterloo tunnel in the background
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e9..._edge_hill.jpg
this is looking the other way than the deltic diesel pic, taken from smithdown road in the early 60s, can see the gridiron sidings going up on the left, and the wagon repair shop on the left
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e9..._edge_hill.jpg
a bit further along, and you can now see smithdown road bridge in the background, the gridiron is on the right, this train is heading towards manchester, the lines curving away to the left head towards wavertree and then london.mid 1950s
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e9...ivemount-1.jpg
further down still and this is the site of the new wavertree technology park station, taken in the mid 50s, the first bridge is a railway line on the high level goods line, the next bridge is rathbone road

going back to edge hill, this train has taken the line to london, and is passing edge hill steam shed on the right, early 1950s

Bloody great pics Mike. I can honestly say I haven't seen any of them before, they really all should be put together in a large glossy paged book.
Will you be showing a selection of Chatsworth Cutting pics when you put the model on display?
That's just amazing! My dad's mate in the 60s used to get rides on the Std 4 tank that marshalled the local yard! Back when health & safety was down to common sense.
Amazing photos Mike, you're a star for posting them up! They're really something special. So far on the web I just haven't seen many decent pictures of that area. I moved to Edge Hill in 2001, and noticed bits of railway here and there, but when I bought a 1905 map reprint of the area I was blown away! It's hard to believe what used to be there.
One minor point though, the bridge/road you refer to as Smithdown Road is in fact Wavertree/Picton Road, which runs more or less parallel to Smithdown.
It is amazing Snappel.
I have the map you are talking about and the amount of railway in the area is just massive.
Its great to look at the Mike's pics to see just what it was once like, it was a hive of activity.
Now it has been streamlined there is hardy anything left, everythinig is overgrown.
