Can anyone tell me if Cheadle Avenue is still there and what district it comes or came under? Thanks.
Cheadle Avenue is here
It is in Old Swan and has a L13 postcode if that helps?
Yes it is off Green lane L13 which is Old Swan
The district is not Old Swan, it is Stanley. St. Anne's Stanley is on the Prescot Rd. corner.
To be honest, I get confused with all these boundaries. As far as I am concerned, and to keep it simple, the said road is in Old Swan.
I don't get confused at all, The district of Stanley stretches from Newsham Park gates to Green lane, it is clearly marked on maps,

So don't keep it as you say simple, keep it correct.
There used to be a dog/speedway stadium there called Stanley Stadium. Stanley abattoir was there. Where do you think they got their names?
The sign board on the church distinctly says "St. Annes Stanley". It is on the corner of Cheadle ave. and Prescot Rd.
It was Wallasey who first answered the question.
I don't see why people should get shot down in flames just because they're trying to be helpful.
So, it's in Stanley.
Big deal.
PhillipG,
I wasn't trying to shoot him down in flames as you put it. He did reply first and I was just correcting him, it was him who chose to argue about it.
I've worked in tuebrook for 17 yrs,and can honestly say that i've never heard anyone refer to "Stanley"! Probably now defunct for any practical purpose, and has similarities with "Brighton-le-Sands, near Waterloo, which most people wouldn't know, though recently there have been efforts to revive the name.
I lived in Tuebrook, Sutton St. for many years until I emigrated 25 years ago, at that time The abattoir was still in use and it was still known as Stanley Abattoir.
If it is no longer in use what is between Old Swan and Fairfield?. I really like to keep up to date so perhaps you could tell me.
Ok my question is answered, thing is I have a photo taken in 1930 of a relys funeral,I'l ask him if its ok to post it if its ok Iwill. thanks for ALL Reply's
I didn't choose to argue!
No one these days actually reconises Stanley as a place seeing as there is no real "hub" like there is in Old Swan or Kensington. It is only know for the abbatoir, which many people would say is a ladmark in Old Swan rather than "Stanley". I know this isnt a good example, but not even the council reconises Stanley on its boundary signs. You just flow from Fairfield into Old Swan when you go over the railway line.
However as Phill G puts it, It is just a name. Everyone has different preferences, mine are evidently different to yours.
May I ask where Stanley Market is? It seems to be outside the area where it takes its name from!
Isn't Stanley market the one opposite the old abattoir. My telephone
number is 226, and if you look up what exchange this is, it is Stanley
even though it is in Cherry Lane by Townsend. I have always classed
Green Lane as ether Old Swan or Tuebrook, but hey it is just names
The name Stanley is the family name of the Earl of Derby of Knowsley Hall.
Perhaps it's the socialist in me that doesn't like the idea of an area being named after one family, and it looks like the name has never taken with the public.
Rather like Harrington in Toxteth, named after Isabella, Countess of Harrington.
This is the last I will say on the subject, I will email the vicar and tell him you guys have done away with his parish, I am sure he will be pleased.

I'm sure the member's of "The Stanley Resident's Association" would like to know if thier district has disapeared!:unibrow:
Passed St. Anne's junior school in 'The Swan' yesterday and it says 'St. Anne's Junior School, Stanley'
Nobody's disputing that the people in Stanley know what it is called, but it has to be admitted that outside of Stanley it must be one of the least known areas of Liverpool.
There was even a cinema before the First World War called the Stanley Hall. (The building's still there).
The Stanley pub was surrounded by scaffolding when I passed in June...I don't know what's going to happen to it though.
For what it's worth, i've always known the abbatoir, market and Church in that area as being preceded with 'Stanley' though I have to admit that if anyone asked me where they were, i'd refer them to the Old Swan district as Stanley is largely unknown outside of that area, yet Fairfield, lower down towards Kensington is known because of the Police club and grounds.
I can see both sides of this :
I am sure the people of Stanley know it's definately there !! :) :)
I must admit though that I didn't know there was a district known as Stanley.
If anyone had asked me directions I would say '' never heard of it, do you mean Stanley Park ? I only know that there is a place called Stanley in or near Wigan.''
Of course I know Old Swan and Kensington running down towards Fairfield.
I have heard of the abattoir being officially known as Stanley Abattoir -- but I didn't give it a second thought. I didn't know that the name refered to the district.
Newsham park should have been called 'Stanley Park' seeing that it is nearer to the actual district. :) Newsham park must have come into existance after Stanley Park had already been named.
There must be a few little known districts in the Merseyside area. ie; Little Bongs !! :D
Part of Anfield can be called 'Walton on the Hill -- but no one ever refers to it as being that.
No one I know ever refers to Harrington either.
That Ken fella from Knotty Ash knew all about 'little bongs'
Did he
No Doddy
Never did I dispute that Stanley didn't exist. I was making a point that the name's still used by the Liverpool Education Authority.
Neither am I disputing Little Bongs, I'm just posting a picture showing that the name's still being used.

And whilst we're on the subject of names that are falling / have fallen by the wayside. I currently live in an area of West Derby that used to be known as Mill Yard.
These disappearing names are fascinating.
Can anyone think of any others ?
.. and can anyone think of any new names.

The new property is sheltered accomodation, St. Annes Court.
My most recent A-Z (about 2 years old) shows Stanley (directly over the Market area) and also shows area caleld Sandown Park (directly over Sandown rd) and Victoria Park just north of Wavertree High Street. Elm Park is also shown on the Shiel Road/Prescot Road junction and Swanside between Knotty Ash and Dovecot.
