'Failed' buildings - bad designs structural failures

A search for the most badly-designed building in Britain has been launched by the body which advises the government on architecture.

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment is encouraging people to send in their nominations for the greatest structural failures.

So far, those put forward for the award include the Centrepoint Tower in London and Liverpool's Rocket flyover. :shock:

A NOTORIOUS Liverpool road has been named as one of Britain's most badly-designed pieces of architecture.

The Rocket flyover, which elevates the Queen's Drive ring road over the M62 approach, has reached a shortlist of Britain's biggest architectural disasters.

The search has been launched by the Commission for Agriculture and the Built Environment (Cabe), the body which advises the Government on architecture.

It ties in with a new publication, The Cost of Bad Design, which discusses what happens when buildings and spaces go wrong.

According to Cabe, many developers have still not learnt from past mistakes, like failing to understand pedestrians' needs.

"A lot of people talk about how they don't like how buildings look, but we're trying to talk about how they work," said Cabe's policy director Matt Bell.

"I think the flyover is an interesting example of something people have nominated that makes their life difficult. It's completely dominated by the cars."

Members of the public are now being encouraged to send in their nominations for the greatest structural failures, as part of National Architecture Week.

"A lot of people have nominated streets because they are difficult to walk in or they make people insecure," said Mr Bell.

"We have to design by researching how people behave."

In the past, Cabe has criticised various aspects of plans for the X-shaped museum on Mann Island and the Lime Street Gateway.

A Daily Post report from 1974 quoted angry residents living underneath the newly-constructed flyover who said it was ruining their lives.

"Once it was pleasant looking out from our homes. Now life is noisy, frustrating and irritating," one said.

A spot near the flyover is a notorious accident blackspot.

Wavertree MP Jane Kennedy has campaigned to get better signs put up at the junction at the end of the M62, raising the issue in the House of Commons.

In a recent accident, a passenger died when a Vauxhall careered into a wall near the Royal Navy club and split in two.

Three weeks earlier, a passenger in a Toyota Avensis died when a car was impaled on a metal post.

Almost everything that has ever been designed as part of a wider 'utopian' planning notion of how cities should function and look are failures. This goes for all the stuff that was built as part of the 60s' Shankland Plan that was supposed to fit into the 'walkways in the sky' part of the scheme... and of course, all of the stuff that has been limited by strange ideas of how the city should now be sculpted to the heritage agenda.. all defficient..all failures to one degree or another.


The Echo/RSA complex now actually works as the new (ish) corner project reinstated the street as primary focus!

Start with the basics, framework, street pattern/grid etc... and stay with it... no extrapolating out into fancy.
