Just found this old thread and couldn`t believe nobody had mentioned the
Merseysippi Jazz Band. They are still playing now. I saw them in 1956 at the
Liverpool Stadium on the same bill as the great Louis Armstrong and his Allstars. It cost me £1/5s and that was to stand up at the back of the arena.

I must confess I miss "Frank goes to Hollywood"!The tragic fate of Holly Johnson! :-(

Ahhhhh Colin Vearncombe aka Black.....he is a great musician and a nice fella. He left Liverpool many years ago and is now living in West Cork. Last time I have seen him was in 2004 live on stage in the Stanley Theatre.

Remember them from the CI club in late 60s well before the lord of the rings was well known - cover band but good - box tops, bee gees etc. You had to be a mod.

Yes, I remember the Harlems with Vinnie Ismail and Alan Sephton.
Also the Gems, The Chants, Derry Wilkie, Sugar Dean, L8 Connection, Colin Aryeety, The Buzz Brothers (formerly the Shuffler Sound) - lots more, can't think off the top of my head.

Nobody has mentioned Rage/Nutz. My mate john mylett was the drummer he was killed in a car accident just after they split up. He had a club named after him that used to be in St Johns precinct. Anyone that has any memories or even better photos please post them on YO!

Blue Vein would play on the clock in salisbury st on thursdays, we got the more plush weekend dates ;)

Cook da books were around when we were too, they had a good chart entry, the video was shot in Gerard Gardens.

Up and running out of afraid of mice/two's company (Phil Jones) used to watch them on the Star & Garter.

Do you remember a group Gnasher, about 6 of them, played i the Cumberland and used to do a song called/or had the lyrics - 'Little red bottle I love you' ?

We played The Royal Court with Blue Vein(my last night with The Touch 16/12/83).They played again there with Up and Running.Blew them both off the stage.
What year for the Cumberland? Could it have been North West One?

Theres a bit of a special event coming off soon in Liverpool...
I have the official press release and will be putting it on here soon..

Tony Bolland is organising it... it is to do with Hessys where Tony Managed..
Everybody who shopped in Hessys is invited... and a lot of faces mentioned on this thread will be there..

I'm the official photographer... and the group get together shot will be on the steps of the St Georges Hall..
it will be a great day, some BIG people are involved to make this a great Hessys re-union..
a meet up is arranged for later for everybody to get pis.sed at..

I think you're spot on with North West one Gnash as it's ringing bells. It would have been 81-83.

Our gig venues were Daleys Dandelion, The Mayflower, Throstles Nest, Mitre, Schooner Inn, Whispers, The Clock, The Dorchester/Pembroke club, Kenny Fields, Windsor Castle aka Bents, Red Star club, Henglers Circus to name but a few. We sometimes played 5 nights a week and I was earning well in excess of my day job :)

We were always in Hesseys and Curly music - then around to Probe, Backtrax and The Magical Mystery Store - then a couple of years later we'd go to Cavern Mecca after MMS closed down.

Tony Bolland... with Albie Donnelly of Supercharge...




Tony was manager of Hessys for about 7 years..
then managed Curly Music for 10 years..
he then owned River City Sounds on Seel Street for 5 years..
In the 70's Tony was a well respected drummer on the Liverpool Music scene..
He later went on to become a music teacher teaching in colleges..
and was music teacher at Hard City Records on Benson Street...

He now writes books about the Liverpool music scene..
Plug In One, the forgotten years..... and Plug In two, the forgotten years....
2 fantastic books from the man in the know on everything musical about Liverpool...
just had a gab on the phone 10 minutes ago with Tony for half an hour..
he's doin' just fine.. !.... and is loving the Cheshire country life lark..
am looking forward to out latest 'Batman and Robin' adventure... ??...

Ged,Whispers.What a t**t of a carry.Couldn't loadout untill they started kickin'(literally) out.With it being a 'wine bar' no ale.We would stock up in the Newington,plastic bottles filled with ale.The bouncers were always trying to find it.The Manager,?,liked his bitter and would bum some.Had a few good stay behinds.He was also at Rudy's in Cumberland St,same owners?.That was another regular gig.

What about Rage/Nutz. John Mylett the drummer was my friend. He was killed in a car crash on hoilday abroad just after the band split up. He had a club named after him in St Johns precinct.

Thats my mate Tony Bolland doing the interview...
checkout his other interviews with other Liverpool music legends...
he is the man responsible for the upcoming Hessy's re-union..
he knows anybody worth knowing on the Liverpool music scene..
and is about the only man going that could get these re-unions going..
the musicians know him and respect him that much..
he's such a great lad, he really is..
