Convention centre six weeks behind schedule
Aug 22 2007 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo
WORK on Liverpool’s new Convention Centre is up to six weeks behind schedule.
But the 10,600-seat Liverpool Echo Arena is on track for completion for the official Capital of Culture opening event in January.
However, fitting out the upper part of the Convention Centre, part of the £146m Kings Dock complex, will not be completed until April.
It was due to be finished before the first conference takes place at the end of February.
Arena and Conference Centre Liverpool officials have not revealed the reasons for the delay to the upper floor.
But it is understood persistent bad weather delayed finishing work on the outside.
Supply of labour has also been a problem because of the amount of building work on Merseyside.
But it is understood no conferences are likely to be cancelled, with other parts of the complex being used instead.
Chief executive Bob Prattey today said clients were being updated about building progress.
“It’s great news the Liverpool Echo Arena will be complete and open in time for the Capital of Culture opening event.
“The Convention Centre’s multi-purpose hall and extensive galleria will be open on time and we expect fitting out of the upper level to be complete by April.”
A spokesman for building firm Bovis Lend Lease said: “We’re working with ACC Liverpool to ensure they’re kept informed about progress on the upper level of the Convention Centre.”
