THE world famous Creamfields dance festival is leaving Liverpool. Talks have already begun to move the huge August Bank Holiday money-spinner spectacular to the Daresbury estate, open parkland around Daresbury Hall in Halton, near Runcorn. Organisers said the former Speke airport site, home to the festival for the past eight years, no longer offered long-term security. The land is part of the Estuary Commerce Park owned by Liverpool Land Development Company and Peel Holdings, which are developing factory and office units there. Creamfields attracts more than 50,000 dance fans from all over the UK. On average they spend about £90 each during their stay, making the event worth about £3.5m to the local economy. Last year revellers packed into the riverside site for the 15-hour dance marathon which attracted top DJs such as Paul van Dyk, Pete Tong and Paul Oakenfold, who made his name at Cream's Liverpool club, as well as leading bands such as the Basement Jaxx, Faithless and Caged Baby. A spokesman for the organisers said today: "Creamfields is moving from Speke because the site no longer offers long-term security. "We are grateful to the local community, the local MP, police, the council and the Culture Company who have all been positive. But it is time to move on. "Discussions with Halton council and Warrington council, because some of the car park will be there, have taken place already. "Talks have been positive." Liverpool council leader Warren Bradley said today: "With the work going on at the Estuary Park they were left with no other option. "We did offer them other venues but they said no because of the size and the number of people who attend. "A lot of what we offered had residential areas around them, so they thought it was more fitting they moved to a place with hardly any residential around because of the impact the people who come to Creamfields have on an area when they arrive. "The new site is only 20 minutes away from where they are now." Come on, Fields the noise CREAMFIELDS was launched in 1998 and has proved a massive hit with clubbers year after year. It put Liverpool on the world map for dance music festivals with top names in the industry flocking to the riverside site. The festival is part of an international array of events that organisers stage each year, from the River Mersey to New York, Berlin and Buenos Aires. Creamfields generates almost £4m of income for the local economy. It is part of the August Bank Holiday music festival held on Merseyside, which includes the Mathew Street Festival which attracts a quarter of a million revellers. Source

Halton Borough Council must be doing something right. First, the return of the Spike Island Festival and now Creamfields. We'd better nail Mathew St. down.

It isn't my thing, Max, but it helps the local economy and they clean up after themselves so I'll be sorry to see it go. |
