| THE cost to Liverpool taxpayers of underwriting the losses of the Summer Pops - £348,000 last year - is to be investigated by city councillors. More than 100,000 flocked to the showcase event, with top stars attracted to the Big Top, but the escalating losses are now causing concern. Last night, city council leader Cllr Mike Storey said: "The Summer Pops attracts thousands of people to our city in June and July, and it is right that the event has our support. Odd, very odd. Its a big tent and its practically full every performance. I went this year for the first time and was amazed at the amount of people from all over the place chatting about how it was great. It made me very proud of our city.

SIMPLY Red have been signed as a headline act at this year's Summer Pops. It will mark a return to the Big Top arena for the group, fronted by Mick Hucknall, who played at the festival in 2003. Since their debut, Money's Too Tight To Mention, reached the UK top 20 in 1985 they have had a string of hits including the number one Holding Back The Years. It is also revealed that chart sensations Il Divo will make their Summer Pops debut on July 21, three days after the Simply Red show. more I'll be looking forward to The Aussie Floyd returning again
