IT STARTED life as a modest play for secondary school children and was first performed at a comprehensive in Fazakerley in 1981.

Now, 25 years later, Willy Russell's much-loved musical Blood Brothers is to be turned into a blockbuster film directed by Alan Parker, responsible for such musicals as Bugsy Malone, Evita, Fame and The Commitments.

Over its long history, Blood Brothers has woven itself into the fabric of Liverpool life with its show-stopping numbers such as Tell Me It's Not True, and is a sell-out whenever it is performed at the Liverpool Empire.

It has featured actresses and singers such as Barbara ****son, Lyn Paul and Linda Nolan, all of whom have played the lead part of Mrs Johnstone.

International productions have boasted the likes of Petula Clark, Helen Reddy and Carole King.

Although the film is still in its early stages and it is not believed any of the roles are yet cast, a spokeswoman for Mr Russell confirmed the writer was working on a script with the film director.

Hopes are high as three of Mr Russell's other plays, Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine and Stags and Hens (as Dancin' Thru The Dark) were turned into films and proved great hits with critics and audiences alike. continues...
