The year 2014 will mark 100 years since the start of the First World War. Liverpool will play a major part in the celebrations and will remember the contribution the city made and mourn the loss of thousands of Liverpool soldiers who lost their lives in 'The Great War'. But how many of the current generation know the history of the conflict and how it came about ?

This article aims to provide as brief an explanation as is possible whilst highlighting the involvement of our great city in World War I.
