View Full Version : TV is RUBBISH These Days!!

TV these days is absolute RUBBISH! For a start, too many bleedin' reality shows (please, NO MORE whingeing if you don't make it into the next round of X-Factor etc. etc.). For another thing, too many boring home improvement programs (stuff guaranteed to send me instantly to sleep!!).
Bring back PROPER variety. I am SICK TO DEATH of all this boring rubbish on TV nowadays. No wonder I am collecting all my old favourite TV shows on DVD (eg. On The Buses, Man About The House etc.). They are provide a welcome relief and blessed alternative to watching all that soporific garbage on TV.
Oh yes - and there is far too much swearing and nastiness on TV nowadays too. No wonder society is declining morally. TV needs a good clean up, and we need producers who know how to entertain people, not bore them to sleep!!

I got sick of rubbish telly a long time ago. I stopped watching tv a few years back - well not entirely true as I will watch a good factual programme or the odd comedy (it has to be good though to get my interest).
Trouble with me is that my attention span is low - I don't have the patience to watch for more than an hour perhaps. Sometimes I might start to watch then can't be bothered waiting to see what happens in the end ! I walk away after half an hour.
I can't sit gawping at the goggle box - 'specially at the bland rubbish that we have now .. moving wallpaper I call it !
I much prefer to read or use the computer.

The only time you see comedians or what I would call classic variety acts is when they are being interviewed on TV after receiving the OBE/MBE. It is rubbish. I have Virgin Media, the whole package and if it wasn't for the kids, I'd dump that. I've seen each episode of Fools and Horses hundreds of time along with Dalziel and Pascoe and New Tricks. Can't take anymore and I've now lost the will to live!

I'm SICK of TV too - it's all bloody adverts for a start!
What happened to all this 'sponsored by' lark? You'll watch the local news, 'sponsored by' then you'll get another one before the weather and then you'll get another one before the UV report!!
I watched a bit of Ken Dodd last night on youtube and nearly killed myself laughing - I'm 31 and 'should' be enjoying the likes of X-Factor and the like but give me On the Buses, Laurel and Hardy, Rising Damp, anything where people had to go away and learn their lines before coming on TV.
Entertainment? My forte now is a good play on Radio 4!

Too many cookery/home improvement/reality shows. Also can't stand Goldenballs, Deal or No Deal and rubbish like that, as well as QI/Buzzcocks et al. Hate the way the celebrity (if that's the right word) contestants think they're all comic geniuses led by the 'self-appointed genius' Stephen Fry. I have to say, I have never laughed at anything Alan Davies has ever said...
Jonathan Ross is another. I never watch him anymore. His persistant interruptions of guests is deplorable. As are his innuendos and insults to them. He has to lower the tone by making some sexual remark. If the Pope was on the show he'd manage to do it. God, and to think this moron gets paid staggering amounts to do it
Jonathan dross of the BBC. Even bad boy Billy Butler doesn't understand how Ross gets away with being able to swear when he can't :)

Sorry but I hated 'On The Busses' :PDT_Aliboronz_11:
All the characters in it were 'orrible. I can't remember the names of them - the gormless woman with glasses, that Pervy bus conductor (not Reg Varney - the other one .. ugh! he was slimey ! .. and as for the inspector - was it Blakey or something ? I couldn't stick him !
Man about the House was very corny and sickly but tolerable for that era.

Like you, we have Virgin Media 'cos our son wanted it !!
It's a lot of rubbish.
My son loves watching the old comedy series though. He has watched 'Only fools and Horses' over and over. He loves 'Rising Damp' and 'Steptoe & Son' which are all good.
I'm glad he likes the old comedy series and has learned who the actors are.
He has gone on to buy the DVD sets. It's nice to see the young ones enjoying the series we used to laugh at.

The ads do my head in !!
As I said, I watch very little telly, but my husband and son have the tv on, so I can hear it in the background.
If I'm watching telly I switch over or turn down the sound when the ads come on.

Waddaya mean, "OMG"? These shows were the BEST.
Man About the House was harmless enough, but On the Buses was awful.
Even then.
Reg Varney and that revolting bus conductor were portrayed as God's Gift to Women, when my Grandmother wouldn't have touched them with a bargepole.
And Olive and her husband...
I found it all rather depressing, and only watched it because I'd recently been a bus conductor myself, and I appreciated the on-going battle with the Inspector.

I'm a fan of british comedy shows, the americans can't make a show without there being a moralistic theme to the show instead of just concentrating on it being funny, that is the problem i find with tv is the american shows , they are weak and just come out of a tv production mill.

When there were just a few T.V. channels the quality of the programmes seemed to be higher than it is today. The plethora of channels demand more ideas, soaps and reality shows outbid each other in pushing the envelope further and further. Gratuitous violence is on open display with cage fighting, sexuality becomes more debased with the growth of pornographic shows and Big Brother is one of the most mind rotting programmes ever devised. Amongst the trash lie little gems ,they get harder to find but they are there. Franco Da Mosto and his journey around the old Venetian trade routes is proving to be engrossing ,Tribal Wives is a multi layered feast ,showing how common human love can overcome wildly different cultures. Alexie Sayles Liverpool certainly sparked discussion here, and Michael Palins programmes have never been less than interesting. Soaps, comedy shows and sitcoms are there for those who like that kind of thing ,rather like the comic strips in newspapers. I watch very few programmes,at most about 2 hours a night, my books are where I get my main source of amusement and thrills. And with books you colour in the word pictures that the author has drawn,I have never seen a film that came near to matching the book.

Franco da Mosto - I really enjoyed hid first series on Italy. I havn't caught up with the latest series but hope to see a repeat.
Tribal wives has been interesting.
Michael Palin's series have been excellent viewing over the years. I like good travellogues or documentary.
Brian, like you, I usually find that films are not always as good as the book.

I'm sorry but On The Buses and Man About the House were classics.
On The Buses was never repeated on terrestrial telly. Reg Varney and Bob Grant would have been millionaires if it was. It was one of the most popular TV shows of the 70's. Poor old Bob (Jack) took his own life after he became depressed when work dried up :(
Other Classics were; Nearest and Dearest, Not on Your Nellie, Billy Liar, The Dustbin Men, The Lovers, Porridge, George and The Dragon, In Loving Memory, Selwyn Froggit, Sykes, Please Sir, The Fenn Street Gang, Till Death Us Do Part, Bless This House, Just Good Friends, Watching, A Fine Romance. . . The list goes on and on. TV in the 60's 70's and 80's was so much better with only 3 channels to choose from.
Now with a million channels to watch, there is literally nothing on! I really only watch my TV if I want to see a specific programme.
I usually just listen to BBC7 the DAB radio station. If there was a TV channel like this I'd start watching telly again.

A lot of those "classics" were heavilly reliant upon sexual innuendo or even racism (Love thy neighbour). It was cheap comedy and a by-product of the Carry on films. Most of them were considered junk in their day and very much non PC today. The true classics like Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Rising Damp, Dads Army and possibly Citizen Smith etc are a class apart. But then, I can recite them pretty much word perfect and I dont want to see any of them again for at least another 10 years. Where is the new blood? Where is the variety? What do these TV companies do all day?

Yes Ged Rising Damp...Remember the episode where they go to the Grange? (I think it is called A Night Out). Also Things That Go Bump in the Night (with the grey lady). Classic series. I also loved Sorry (with Ronnie Corbett), Open All Hours & Porridge. Fawlty Towers & Blackadder as well.
Yes got those on dvd Mark. That grey lady ghost one is great - Rigsby flies up the stairs when Alan gets dressed up in the gear - the face on him ha ha ha.

How many of you remember "The Army Game" ,with Michael Medwin,Norman Rossington, Bernard Bresslaw (I think this was his debut in T.V.) and Ted Lune ? It was a rag bag of comedy but we loved it. And there was "Great Scott It's Maynard",this was in prehistoric times,Bill Maynard was slim and handsome and Terry Scott was his fat friend . There was Harry Worth ,who always kicked off his show doing the kicks with his reflection in a shop window, and then "Sykes" with Eric Sykes Hattie Jacques and Derek Guyler. Would they stand up against todays output ? I think that humour has altered so much ,debased might be more apt, that they would'nt stand a chance.
It is lovely to see them again when they come on ,and Radio 7 is fabulous when it comes to raiding the archives,we have it on during Sunday dinner and ,if we are having a roast, I am transported back down the years to when we had dinner at Grandmas.

When Granada + was still in operation, it would show "The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club" It was a great piece of 70's TV, playing host to many a unknown performer as well as those who were starting out.
I remember once when this programme was on a few years ago, Kathy Kirby came on...her lungs were on top form that night as when it came to her belting out the chorus...she blew our fuses!

On The Buses is currently being shown on ITV3 early weekday mornings. I recorded a couple of episodes this week. The comedy is dated, but it is a piece of social history. The comedy now comes from the styles of the time, and their attitude. Both Stan and Jack look in their mid fortys, but are still chasing the 'birds'. Jack looks like he could eat an apple through a letterbox with his teeth :)
I have enjoyed the American version of The Office, but it is tooked away after midnight on a Thursday. I also record episodes of Frasier which is broadcast early morning on C4. I thank God for a PVR, as there is very little on during 'prime' time' that I watch.

One of the best 90 minute slots on Tv at the moment is S.A.C. 2nd GIG.
Re-runs of 'The Prisoner' on ITV4 are also worth a headsup. That series
predicted our surveillance society by more than forty years.
