I'm using the Genealogy Group as an example to show you hoiw to join a 'Custom Usergroup'.
The attachment below gives you an idea of how to join.
Click on User CP >> Networking >> Group Memberships >> Join Group
Note to Group Leaders
You will be notified when someone requests to join your group, you can either accept or decline to the request to join. (U must do this)
Note to Moderators
*IMPORTANT* Moderators may loose their powers if they join another Usergroup.
Why will this happen?
Because custom groups still have the same level of power as normal Registered users, not Mods etc.
