View Full Version : Creamfields
THE world famous Creamfields dance festival is leaving Liverpool.
Talks have already begun to move the huge August Bank Holiday money-spinner spectacular to the Daresbury estate, open parkland around Daresbury Hall in Halton, near Runcorn.
Organisers said the former Speke airport site, home to the festival for the past eight years, no longer offered long-term security.
The land is part of the Estuary Commerce Park owned by Liverpool Land Development Company and Peel Holdings, which are developing factory and office units there.
Creamfields attracts more than 50,000 dance fans from all over the UK.
On average they spend about £90 each during their stay, making the event worth about £3.5m to the local economy.
Last year revellers packed into the riverside site for the 15-hour dance marathon which attracted top DJs such as Paul van Dyk, Pete Tong and Paul Oakenfold, who made his name at Cream's Liverpool club, as well as leading bands such as the Basement Jaxx, Faithless and Caged Baby.
A spokesman for the organisers said today: "Creamfields is moving from Speke because the site no longer offers long-term security.
"We are grateful to the local community, the local MP, police, the council and the Culture Company who have all been positive. But it is time to move on.
"Discussions with Halton council and Warrington council, because some of the car park will be there, have taken place already.
"Talks have been positive." Liverpool council leader Warren Bradley said today: "With the work going on at the Estuary Park they were left with no other option.
"We did offer them other venues but they said no because of the size and the number of people who attend.
"A lot of what we offered had residential areas around them, so they thought it was more fitting they moved to a place with hardly any residential around because of the impact the people who come to Creamfields have on an area when they arrive.
"The new site is only 20 minutes away from where they are now."
Come on, Fields the noise
CREAMFIELDS was launched in 1998 and has proved a massive hit with clubbers year after year.
It put Liverpool on the world map for dance music festivals with top names in the industry flocking to the riverside site.
The festival is part of an international array of events that organisers stage each year, from the River Mersey to New York, Berlin and Buenos Aires.
Creamfields generates almost £4m of income for the local economy.
It is part of the August Bank Holiday music festival held on Merseyside, which includes the Mathew Street Festival which attracts a quarter of a million revellers.

Howie 02-23-2006, 09:25 PM Halton Borough Council must be doing something right. First, the return of the Spike Island Festival and now Creamfields. We'd better nail Mathew St. down.

A.D.Williams 02-24-2006, 12:51 AM It isn't my thing, Max, but it helps the local economy and they clean up after themselves so I'll be sorry to see it go.

Anyone here ever been to it?
Anyone here ever been to it?
Felt like i have been there the last 4/5 years. The weekend Creamfield arrives is a very busy one indeed, buzzing. Sorry to see it go if only for its association with Liverpool and the money for the local economy. Was gonna sell scouse this year as well
ScouseCol 02-24-2006, 06:26 PM Anyone here ever been to it?

it is a big loss and a shame that

Whilst it is a huge loss for Liverpool in terms of the attachment Cream has to the city, the financial loss (on one weekend) should be eclipsed by the amount of building projects currently being built on the huge Old Airport site plus Banks Rd. You are talking about a thousand jobs at least.
One comment I read on a cream festival web site stated that the festival was great except for the fact it was 'full of scousers' So sod 'em and wave a good bye and hello to more sustainable jobs.
Howie 05-09-2006, 10:33 PM New site hope for Creamfields
May 9 2006
Liverpool Echo
CREAMFIELDS organisers have applied for a licence to stage the event near Warrington.
Detailed plans for the Saturday, August 26 event have been submitted to Halton council.
It will be the first year it has been held at Daresbury after moving from its previous home at the old Liverpool Airport site in Speke.
Organisers have been keen to point out that Creamfields enjoys one of the best reputations for safety of any music festival.
There is now a consultation period and members of Halton's regulatory committee are expected to make their decision within 20 days.

Why can't they put it in a farmers field say by the M57 a bit like what that fella does with Glastonbury,it will be away from most residents and any that are disturbed should be offered a free weekend break away by James Barton,it will also have good motorway access. There are Creamfields in Buenos Aires and Moscow proving that Liverpool culture still spreads to the four corners of the World long after The Beatles are gone so it doesn't seem fitting that Liverpool no longer has one.Bring it back I say!

year's festival
Members of Halton Council are to decide whether to grant a licence for the 9th annual Creamfields festival planned at Daresbury, near Warrington.
Residents have expressed concern over noise levels at the August Bank Holiday event - headlined by The Prodigy.
The festival, previously held at Speke in Liverpool, usually attracts about 40,000 revellers.
After last year's festival, police in Merseyside said that it had maintained its reputation as one of the safest events of its kind in the country.

Howie 06-28-2006, 09:09 AM Protesters lose fight to stop Creamfields festival
Jun 28 2006
By Alan Weston, Daily Post
THE Creamfields dance festival will go ahead at its new site in Daresbury over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
A meeting at Runcorn town hall last night approved an application for the festival to take place, in the teeth of fierce opposition from hundreds of nearby residents.
Organisers confirmed that they hoped they could make Daresbury the new permanent home of the 45,000-capacity event, which this year will feature acts such as Gnarls Barkley and The Zutons.
During an often heated three-hour meeting last night, objectors, who included neighbouring Warrington Council, put forward their arguments for why the application for a licence to use the land for the festival should be refused. They claimed it would lead to unacceptable levels of noise and also raised fears about crime and anti-social behaviour as a result of the all-night event being held in the semi-rural location.
But, after hearing the arguments put by Creamfields, Halton's regulatory committee decided the event can go ahead over the weekend of August 26/27.

Halton will be home to Creamfields
World-famous music festival Creamfields will take place in Halton for the first time this summer. Halton Borough Council’s Regulatory Committee granted a premises licence on Tuesday for the event to be held on the Daresbury estate on August 26 and 27.
Regulatory Committee Chair, Cllr Ged Philbin, said: “The Committee considered the application and all the representations very carefully and made the decision to grant the application subject to conditions.
“We believe the organisers have demonstrated, through their application, that they have given full consideration to all the issues around public safety, noise and traffic management.
“Cream has an excellent track record for providing safe and secure events and we would like to reassure local residents that the Council, the organisers and the emergency services will be working very closely together to ensure the event runs smoothly and that disruption to the local area is minimised.”
Headlining the festival will be The Prodigy, Goldfrapp, Gnarls Barkley and The Zutons. For further details, including ticket information, see www.cream.co.uk
Why did it stop offering long term security and will the new land offer it?
The original plan for Creamfields years ago was for it to be held at Spike Island in Widnes, but then the old airport site came up and was a better option, but with all the development on the site, Creamfields had to find a new site

Howie 07-13-2006, 09:35 PM Crouch’s Robot Dance Craze Set To Pop At Creamfields Festival
Research undertaken by the UK’s Number One dance festival Creamfields has revealed that Peter Crouch’ robot will be the most popular dance move amongst visitors to this years event in Daresbury, Halton, Cheshire.
Organisers of the festival, asked 5000 ticket buyers which dance they will be busting a move to on Saturday 26th August Bank Holiday Weekend, with 70% of respondents agreeing that the giant striker’s body-popping antics will top the chart and continue to be the most popular dance move of the summer. The irony is that the big man plays his football for the red half of Liverpool.
Second with 20% of the votes is the ever popular ‘head bang’ - the signature dance of The Prodigy’s Keith, made famous in the band’s legendary Firestarter video.
Making their debut alongside The Zutons is “The Indie Shuffle” and the “Britpop Swagger” , which both received five percent of the votes. This year’s line up is more diverse than ever before with The Zutons, Gnarls Barkley, Goldfrapp and The Prodigy appearing as the headline acts and over a hundred of the worlds best DJ’s.
Cream CEO James Barton said: “Considering the amount of hardcore dance music fans that visit Creamfields each year, the fact that the most popular dance will be ‘The Crouch’ is astounding. Whilst the inclusion of Gnarls Barkley and The Zutons is bringing a whole new fanbase to the event, we didn’t anticipate Peter would have such a huge influence on the ticket-goers!”

Howie 08-27-2006, 12:33 AM I think it was a big mistake for us to lose Creamfields to Halton. More effort should have been made to find a place for it in Liverpool. Apart from the income it generated we are supposed to be the Capital of Culture and should be supporting live music events.
I agree with you Howie, it was a mistake and I think a real loss, Urban has not grasp the wider picture (nothing changes) as a brand Cream is worldwide, they might have an event in a s****y field in Runcorm, but also in Spain, Russia, Africa, South America and the USA.
The money generated alongside the prestige for the City of Liverpool is what they have lost. (Spike Island in Widnes was the original venue for Creamfields, it fell through and they went to Speke)
The other thing that Urban needs to realise is that don't just follow a scouse football team, I follow Liverpools first football team.

John, tbh honest I'm not bothered about Creamfields. Anyway, the continued regeneration of the area, I am. Apart from the other huge factory being built there and smaller units, German printing giant Avarto Bertelsmann are building on a 50 acre site there which eats onto the old Creamfields site. The site could eventually accommodate a 1 million sq ft works employing up to 1,000 staff. It's huge. A few hundred here and there soon ads up.

I do agree, the speed that it was lost to Halton was incredible. Maybe it'll come back next year.
Maybe not, hopefully they have a site that has the potential for growth of the festival, it has excellent transport links, 5 mins off the M56, Daresbury Expressway from the bridge.
It seems Creamfields was a success. A 'Scouse - Fest' as described in the Echo.

Halton is now home to Creamfields, it ticks all the boxes.
Creamfields Gets The Green Light
Licence Granted
Creamfields has been awarded a licence for its 2007 show – to be held again at the Daresbury Estate in Halton, Cheshire.
The decision was made by the Regulatory Committee of Halton Borough Council on Friday.
This year there were just nine objections to the festival, compared to more than 400 individuals from 242 premises for the 2006 event.
Cream Chief Executive James Barton said the successful staging of last year’s show proved the quality of the organisation’s event management.
“Last year we demonstrated our considerable expertise at managing a major show like this. Moving the whole event to a new site was a significant achievement and we carried it out successfully thanks to the excellence of our operational team.”
He added that he was looking forward to a similarly successful event this time round now that the licence had been granted.
“I’m confident that we will again take the opportunity to confirm the quality of our organisational ability and keep any disruption in the local area to a minimum.
“That ability also ensures that our great line up of headline acts and DJs can be enjoyed by the thousands of visitors Creamfields attracts.”
This year’s show, on August 25th and 26th, will feature the Chemical Brothers, Groove Armada, Kelis and Mark Ronson on the main stage, plus New Young Pony Club, Ladytron, Erick Morillo, 2 Many DJ’s, Simian Mobile Disco, Harry Romero, and the return of the legendary Carl Cox, among many other performers.
The event also proved to be of huge financial benefit to local businesses last year, especially hotels, guest houses, taxi firms, pubs and food outlets.
An independent report prepared by The Mersey Partnership for tourism organisation Visit Chester and Cheshire said that the total visitor spend generated by Creamfields was £6.7 million, of which 80% - or £5.4 million - stayed in Cheshire.
Leader of Halton Borough Council, Cllr Tony McDermott, commented:
“The Council’s Regulatory Committee has agreed to approve the licence application, which was developed to take on board last year’s experiences, and which we hope will deliver and build upon the successes of that event.
“Once again we hope that Halton’s residents and traders will benefit from, and enjoy, the festival which is a major event for the borough.”
Bill Badrock, Chairman of the Halton Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the return of the festival and said he wished everyone success with this year’s show.
“This is a huge publicity event which captures the news headlines and makes a significant contribution to the local economy.
“Creamfields is a global player and the local authority did well to secure this event; and also thanks to the Chamber’s president Lord Daresbury for providing the venue. I wish all those involved every success.”
