The Street is a major new drama series being shown on BBC One this spring. Written by Jimmy McGovern (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5891#post5891), it stars a host of Northern actors eg Jim Broadbent, Jane Horrocks, Sue Johnston, David Schofield and Jody Latham, one of the stars of Shameless.

Set in Manchester (*yes, you are as suprised as I am. Jimmy was born in Liverpool)

It's actually set up here in Manchester but I had thoughts initially of a street off Kensington - that's Kensington, Merseyside NOT Kensington, London! But there are always problems on Merseyside because if you portray a character on screen who's a thief say, then you're compounding a stereotype. Our city is very sensitive about how Scousers are portrayed. So it's a lot easier to do it in Manchester.

This series has been excellent. The last episode was very good - the one about the asylum seeker. It was sad and thought provoking.
What I like about these stories is that there is a message behind them.

The one about the bloke retiring from work was quite sad too, how he found himself on the scap heap. It makes you think about things.
