View Full Version : Liverpool John Lennon Airport
MORE people travelled through Liverpool John Lennon Airport last month than at any other time in its history. A total of 465,845 passengers used the Speke terminal in August, breaking all records. The figure for August 2005 represented a 33.7% increase on August 2004. Extra flights and services, and greater awareness of the new destinations available from JLA, are thought to be behind the surge in passengers.
The success never ends!
5,000 jobs in JLA expansion!
LIVERPOOL John Lennon airport will open consultations next month on its latest expansion that could attract 10 million passengers and create 5,000 jobs.

yes, flying is adictive, I used to say I would never fly .. but after the first time there was no stopping me ! If I could afford it I would be hopping on a plane and flying everywhere. It's wonderful to look down on the scenery and see all the beautiful clouds. Night flights are nice too when cities look like patterned jewelry on the landscape.
Easyjet is very good, it's just a matter of tolerating the cramped conditions for a few hours.
At least I was only on the plane for at most an hour since it was only going to Paris.
THE biggest public consultation exercise since the 1970s is to be launched next month by Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
Airport managers want to gauge reaction to ambitious plans that could see an extended runway to enable JLA to handle flights to California and the Middle East.

Airline boss backing JLA RYANAIR chief Michael O'Leary has backed Liverpool John Lennon airport to double in size - and promised to match it.
The boss of the no-frills operator was speaking at last night's inaugural Liverpool Chamber of Commerce annual dinner in the Devonshire House hotel.
He praised Liverpool JLA's expansion and told nearly 400 guests that it mirrored Rya-nair in its own ambitions to double in size, from 35m to 70m passengers: "I believe one
of our partners in that growth will be Liverpool airport.
"Like Ryanair, Liverpool airport is not content to sit on their laurels because they will double in size in the next five years.
"And whenever they expand a terminal we promise we will park an aircraft outside it."
He added: "We ignored Liverpool to our shame for about 10 years.
"I admit, I thought Peel Holdings was mad to buy Liverpool, not because it had a bad history, but it competed with Manchester, which was one of the most successful in the business.
"What they have done has been revolutionary. I told them two years ago it wouldn't bloody work but I have been proved wrong.
"Competition is driving success. Liverpool airport will double in size to 10m passengers in the next five years if the people support the airport and the flights coming into the aiport."
Scousemouse 11-29-2005, 09:59 PM Air travel is the world's fastest growing source of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which cause climate change.
Globally the world's 16,000 commercial jet aircraft generate more than 700 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), the world's major greenhouse gas, per year. Indeed aviation generates nearly as much CO2 annually as that from all human activities in Africa.
One person flying a return trip between London and New York generates between 1.5 and 2 tonnes of CO2.
The huge increase in aircraft pollution is largely due to the rapid growth in air traffic which has been expanding at nearly two and half times average economic growth rates since 1960. It is expected the number of people flying will virtually double over the next 15 years. This means increasing airport capacity, more flights, more pollution and increasingly crowded airspace.

It’s official - John Lennon Airport tops latest CAA league table as it forecasts another record Easter.
12 Apr 2006
Management at Liverpool John Lennon Airport are forecasting their busiest Bank Holiday Easter weekend ever as they celebrate the latest statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority that show Liverpool is the UK's fastest growing major airport.
In 2005 Liverpool John Lennon Airport handled over 4.4 million passengers - an increase of some 32% compared to 2004 and a growth figure higher than any other UK airport in the category for airports handling in excess of 1 million annual passengers. The additional million passengers that used Liverpool in 2005 also helped the Airport move up one place in the league table of UK airports, leapfrogging over Nottingham East Midlands Airport and becoming the 12th busiest airport in Britain - its highest position ever. Less than 10 years ago the Airport was in 18th position having now overtaken airports such as Cardiff, London City, Leeds and Aberdeen.
This weekend will be the first peak period of the year for the Airport with the great 'Easter Bank Holiday getaway' bringing record passenger numbers with many looking to make the most of the Airport's numerous low cost flights and fly off for a holiday break.
Over 53,000 passengers are expected to pass through the Airport over the Bank Holiday weekend - an increase of 30% compared to Easter last year. The expected increase in passenger numbers follows the addition of a range of new services over the past 12 months to destinations including Oslo, Porto, Seville, Granada, Pisa, Gdansk, Southampton and Derry with airlines such as Ryanair, Wizzair and Flybe.
Earlier this week easyJet launched three new services to Krakow, Marseille and Faro just in time for the Easter break, taking the average number of daily scheduled departures to almost 70.
Robin Tudor, the Airport's Corporate Affairs Manager commented, “All this week we have seen increased numbers of passengers using the Airport as passengers from throughout the North West take advantage of the low fares and great deals available with airlines flying from Liverpool.
“For some time now we believed that Liverpool was one of the UK's fastest growing airports because of the continued month on month passenger growth and route expansion. These latest CAA statistics now prove the Airport is in fact top in this department. To use the football analogy, it wasn't long ago that the Airport was battling against relegation in the lower leagues of the UK Airport industry, but today Liverpool is seen as a 'premier league' airport continually improving its league position,” added Robin.

Plans to build a hotel and multi-storey car park next to Liverpool John Lennon Airport have been submitted.
The £22.5m development, which will be built opposite the terminal, has been designed in response to demand from passengers, airport bosses said.
The car park will replace the current short stay site with a six storey, three star hotel located on top.
If approved, the development will still depend on a grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Culture year
Neil Pakey, Chief Executive of Peel Airports said: "With flights from almost 60 scheduled destinations to Liverpool the demand for convenient hotel accommodation on site has never been greater.
"As the airport is open 24 hours a day, passengers arrive and depart all through the night and this development and the associated short stay multi-storey car park is a natural progression of improved on site facilities to satisfy the needs of today's airport user."
Peel Airports said the hotel could be completed within 18 months in time for Capital of Culture year in 2008.
A planning application has been submitted to Liverpool City Council.

How great's that, straight on the back of new routes to Egypt,Tenerife and Prague.:celb (23):
CONFIRMATION of a daily New York to Liverpool flight will pave the way for Britain's first "superport". More details soon.....
LIVERPOOL is to become the UK's first "superport" with air and shipping industry leaders working in tandem to fill international cruise liners with thousands of passengers from transatlantic flights.
That was the unique vision revealed by John Lennon Airport's owners Peel Holdings yesterday, after the city's first direct flight to New York was unveiled by Glasgow firm Flyglobespan.
The new daily service will carry 2,000 passengers a week between John Lennon Airport and Newark, on a 189-seater Boeing 757 from next May 25, in Liverpool's 800th anniversary year.
Last night it emerged JLA's new 25-year masterplan, expected to be published next week, will include proposals to extend its runway by almost half a kilometre inland.
That will open up the city to wider long haul planes like Boeing 767s and Airbus A330s, which can carry up to 250 passengers and fly as far as Las Vegas and the Maldives.
It would enable the option of links with US hub airports like Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia Washington, and destinations as far flung as the Middle East and the Caribbean.
Neil Pakey, chief executive of Peel Holdings, revealed he plans to exploit the company's unique position as owners of both the airport and the Port of Liverpool.
He wants to attract cruise liner operators to link up with transatlantic flights, which he said had until yesterday been the "Holy Grail" for JLA.
He also revealed he wants to expand freight and business routes, particularly in the Far East but first the airport must carry out an eight-week public consultation on the runway plan.
The masterplan should be submitted to the Department for Transport this autumn, but it could be two years before a planning application is approved if objectors call for a public inquiry.
Mr Pakey said: "This new 757 flight is the limit on our existing runway. If we were to look at establishing links with a US hub airport like Atlanta or Chicago or Detroit, then we need to have a larger runway.
"There is quite an appetite for it both in Liverpool and America, and there is no doubt it would be a massive regeneration boost for the Merseyside region."
But, he added: "There is no mad rush to do this. At this stage it's about setting out our vision and seeing how things evolve."
Click here (http://videos.icnetwork.co.uk/icliverpool/neil040706.wmv) to watch Neil Hodgson's video report on this story
Mr Pakey said he wanted to develop "synergy" between the port and airport, by encouraging cruise line operators to sign up to package deals to link up with transatlantic flights.
It would allow passengers to fly into Liverpool and then board a cruise to take them either back to the US, or on to Europe.
Mr Pakey said no operators were yet signed up, but he said: "Hopefully they will be queuing up, it's a great opportunity."
He added: "We are still playing catch up with Manchester. But when it comes to regeneration the region could not continue with only one international airport.
"A lot of what we do will complement what Manchester is doing."
Frank Robotham, group marketing director of Peel Ports, said there was huge scope to expand the cruise market once the city's planned new cruise liner platform opens.
He said: "In terms of infrastructure Peel is unique in Liverpool because it owns both the port and the airport."
He added: "If you look at the growth at the airport and the potential for the new cruise liner platform, there is great potential for substantial inward investment in future."
The new Liverpool-Newark flight follows a sustained lobbying campaign by tourism leaders through regeneration group The Mersey Partnership.
Roy Morris, chairman of TMP, welcomed the "fantastic news", which he said would boost tourism and trade on both sides of the Atlantic.
He said: "With a number of major US companies already investing here, securing this air link will further reinforce Liverpool as a destination on the international business map."
He quoted the poet John Betjeman: "My love of New York is something to do with Liverpool, there's the same quality of energy in both cities."
TMP's director of investment Mark Basnett said the route would offer a "very competitive option" to business travellers.
He said: "TMP knows from its own research and lobbying work that there is demand in Merseyside for a convenient, accessible route in to the East Coast US and now we will have it."
Peel Ports has just secured three cargo sailings a week to New York from Liverpool, making the port the largest port in the UK providing freight services to the US.
The port has grown from handling 9m tonnes of cargo a year in 1984 to 34m tonnes in 2005.
Mr Robotham added: "Our position on the North Atlantic is at an all time high."

Route will trade on 'unique' Liverpool >>>>>>>>>>>
OPERATED by Glasgow airline Flyglobespan the new route will trade on Liverpool as a unique 'brand', harnessing the attractions of the Beatles, historic maritime links and golfing facilities.
Tourism managers at The Mersey Partnership believe it will at least double, if not treble the figure of 30,000 or so US tourists who visit Liverpool each year.
Already last nigh, Flyglobespan's managing director Tom Dalrymple said he was "delighted" at advanced bookings on the company's website after the route went on sale yesterday.
The announcement came 340 years after the first cargo ship sailed from Liverpool to America in 1666.
With 25 business class seats on each Boeing 767 journey from £299 one way, and 167 budget seats from £149 one way, or £289 return.
The service will include champagne, gourmet meals and liquors for business class passengers and economy travellers will have to buy any meals they want on board.
Set to be launched in the US next week, it is expected to prove attractive to business travellers who currently use Continental's service from nearby Manchester to Newark whose fares for BusinessFirst start at around £2,000 return.
A whole-hearted embrace for route
YOKO ONO, who renamed John Lennon airport after her husband on July 2 2002, said: "It's a great day for both Liverpudlians and New Yorkers. How fitting that there will soon be flights from John Lennon Airport to New York.
"As you all know, John had a tremendous fondness for both of these cities. He would have been delighted that now there will be a direct flight between these two historic cities, across the universe, so to speak."
STEPHEN ROBERTS, general manager of the Crowne Plaza hotel at the Pier Head, said: "We have tremendous links with New York already and this will consolidate those links. Both Liverpool and New York are seen as great destinations."
MARTIN KING, head of tourism for TMP said the new flights would have a "high economic impact". Genealogy is such a big thing in tourism in America; 17% of hits on the TMP website come from the US. Around 8% of US travellers come to the Merseyside area, while 66% go to London. Why should London get all the benefits? Liverpool has such a strong brand these flights will make significant in-roads to our economy."
ALAN BEVAN, MD of City Residential, agents for Downing Development's Eden Square, ECF's St Paul's Square, and Alexandra Tower in Princes Dock, said: "Americans are active overseas investors and this route means we can now tap into the largest and richest regional market in America. The Liverpool brand is already strong in New York and job creation benefits could be substantial."
PAUL ELLISON, chairman of the Friends of Liverpool JLA, said: "We are overjoyed at the news Liverpool is to be linked with New York. It reflects the belief we have had for 25 years that Liverpool airport could become one of the big players in aviation."
Runway will be extended
LIVERPOOL John Lennon Airport's runway currently measures almost 2.3 kilometres, running east to west.
The airport's new masterplan, which takes its development up to the year 2030, includes proposals to extend the runway by 314 metres.
Beyond that, there would be a further 150 metre extension at either end of the runway making the total length for take off 2750 metres.
That is almost half a kilometre longer than the existing 2286 metres.
The expansion will allow wider long haul aircraft to take off from the airport.
It means up to 250 passengers at a time could be flown as far as Las Vegas and the Caribbean, whereas the furthest flight the existing runway can sustain is to Newark.

They can extend the runway over the river by using the earth and rock from the docks they needlessly filled in. Excavate: Toxteth, Harrington, Victoria, Trafalgar and Clarence docks, and the earth is there.

Controversial! But with an element of truth about it. The fuss generated would be enourmous, and the housing itself is solid enough. That said, there isnt any social mixture, which I feel is needed to make communities viable.

It's an isolated working class ghetto. The houses are solid but of no insulation value. It is cheaper to demolish these houses than to update them to modern envornmental ways and insulation. The eco homes in Liverpool 8 is the way. The population can be re-located to a superior location and the land used for airport usage.
It is just too close to the runway and if a plane strays off a few 1000 may be killed. Wrong place, wrong type of homes, wrong type of suburb.

AROUND £600m will be invested in Liverpool John Lennon Airport if all elements of an ambitious masterplan to treble passenger numbers and create the UK's first "superport" succeed.
Airport executives yesterday unveiled broad details of a "transformational vision" they hope will revitalise Liverpool as a major port both for maritime and air freight in the next 25 years.
They announced major plans for a new World Cargo Centre to increase freight handling 15-fold to 220,000 tonnes a year, on Green Belt farmland around the former historic village of Oglet.
Yesterday, the Daily Post revealed the airport wants to build a new road link to relieve congestion around the airport for traffic travelling from the east, including cars crossing the Runcorn Bridge.
The draft plan for 2030 outlines three possible options for the road, called the eastern access transport corridor (EATC), which is expected to be a dual carriageway with a built-in cycle lane.
The first option, favoured by JLA's management, is the shortest route. It would bring traffic from Speke Boulevard near the Jaguar factory, round the back of the Speke estate.
Road options two and three would start farther up Speke Road (A561), which leads to the Runcorn Bridge and M62, nearer to the junction with the A5300, which leads to the M57.
The airport's terminal buildings would also be expanded to cope with passenger numbers tripling, from around 4.5m in 2005 to 12.3m in 2030.
And the runway would be extended by around half a kilometre inland, to allow JLA to take wider long-haul planes like Boeing 767s and Airbus 330s, capable of flying as far as Shanghai.
The aim is to open up more routes both for passenger flights to the US hubs, and for freight links with the Far East, particularly with emerging markets in India and China, and the Middle East.
The entire plan would create a total of somewhere between 7,000 and 9,000 extra jobs, which could take the number employed directly and indirectly from 2,300 today, to 11,300 by 2030.
Any environmental impact is hoped to be offset by the opening up of a further 124 acres (50 hectares) for public use as an extension of the Mersey Waterfront Coastal Park.
It would link up with the Mersey Way footpath and the Pennine Way, and "provide a wide range of habitats for wildlife, with a proposal to include visitor facilities," according to the plan.

LIVERPOOL John Lennon Airport (JLA) has seen the fastest passenger growth out of the UK's top 15 airports over the past decade, a new report reveals.
The study, by property consultants GVA Grimley, also shows demand for office and industrial space around the airport has increased in the past five years.
The report - Take-Off and Take Up: Airports and the Property Market - shows passenger numbers at the airport, which hit 4.4m last year, increased by more than 800% between 1995 and 2005.
That is much higher than the national average of around 200%.
Take-up of commercial property - both office and industrial - around the airport also accelerated between 2000 and 2005.
In that period, the average annual take-up has 40,000 sq ft for offices and 160,000 sq ft for industrial premises.
Recent major take-up includes more than 100,000 sq ft by Littlewoods and 30,000 sq ft by the Riverside Group in the office market and in industrial, 200,000 sq ft by Langtree Group and 100,000 sq ft by Charles Evans Shopfitters. continues (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/thebusinessweek/regionalnews/tm_objectid=17476336%26method=full%26siteid=50061% 26page=2%26headline=lennon%2dairport%2dsees%2dgrow th%2dsoar%2dahead-name_page.html)....

Howie 08-29-2006, 09:54 PM New environmental scheme for Liverpool airport
Liverpool John Lennon Airport (http://www.liverpooljohnlennonairport.com/) and The Mersey Forest (http://www.merseyforest.org.uk/) have joined together to give passengers the opportunity to contribute to their local environment and take a step towards off-setting the carbon emissions from their flight.
The new initiative known as ‘Last Call’ provides passengers with the opportunity to invest in their local environment before or after taking a flight from Liverpool airport by helping to plant trees in the nearby Mersey Forest, the UK’s largest Community Forest.
There are two ways in which passengers can support the scheme, either by donating money in the collection box which is located in the airport’s departure lounge or by contributing online at www.lastcall.org.uk. Contributions made by passengers will go towards planting trees to help absorb some of the CO2 emissions from their flight. Liverpool airport’s operator, The Peel Group, has also pledged to match passenger contributions made at the collection box.
The Mersey Forest’s project director, Paul Nolan, said: “There is increasing awareness about the importance of climate change and the need for us all to make changes to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide we produce. This programme will continue to raise awareness, create new woodlands and help to lock up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.”

WIRRAL councillors are to ask Liverpool John Lennon airport for reassurances noise and pollution will be kept to a minimum if a massive £660m expansion goes ahead.
The borough's executive board last night agreed their formal response to Peel Holdings' ambitious plan to treble the size of the airport by 2030.
Around 70% of planes leaving and entering Liverpool fly over Wirral, in particular the area around Eastham and neighbouring Hale Village.
Residents living below the flight path in parts of the borough have long complained about the noise made by overflying aircraft, particularly at night.

Flyglobespan, the airline introducing a daily link from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to New York next May 25 is planning to introduce a weekly flight to Toronto the same month.
The ECHO understands an official announcement could be made later this week.
Toronto has two airports, Pearson and Hamilton. The Liverpool flight will link with the latter.
A spokesman for Edinburgh-based Flyglobespan said: "We hope to make an announcement soon."
Liverpool John Lennon airport spokesman Robin Tudor said: "We know Flyglobespan are looking at further traffic out of Liverpool and we are very hopeful of an imminent announcement."
Flyglobespan is set to take over a number of routes from Canadian airline Air Transat and will announce the Liverpool-Toronto link as part of a package of new flights.
The company already flies to Canada's largest city from Manchester and from Glasgow to Orlando in Florida.
This July the ECHO revealed Flyglobespan's plans to launch the city's first transatlantic route to New York for a single fare from £149, including taxes.
Flyglobespan managing director Karan Browntold reporters at the time that she was already considering more Liverpool routes, including Orlando.
Andrew Weir, vice president of the Toronto Convention and Visitors Association, said the route would prove a big hit.
He said: "Toronto has a very lively music and arts scene and that is the story we are promoting on the world market.
"So the people of Toronto are open to exposing themselves to experimental arts and culture and Liverpool may be a very sensible and attractive reason to visit, for its edgy creativity."
Mark Basnett, director of investment for regeneration agency The Mersey Partnership, said:
"Flyglobespan's decision is another great boost for our economy and underlines the company's commitment and confidence in the Liverpool region.
"It further demonstrates the importance of Liverpool John Lennon Airport as a global gateway.
"This new link will further reinforce Liverpool as a destination on the international map.
"It offers another opportunity to attract new visitors to our wealth of attractions and enhance the business connections of the area."
ENVIRONMENTALISTS are preparing to lodge major objections to John Lennon Airport's plan to treble passenger numbers by 2030.
Initial consultation on the airport expansion plan was due to end today, and Friends of the Earth last night called into question the projections put forward for passenger numbers in the 25-year masterplan.
It also raised concerns about the increase in greenhouse gases produced if air traffic increases in line with the £600m development.
The pressure group says aviation will use up the country's entire Kyoto Convention quota for carbon emissions by 2037 if all UK airports go ahead with similar plans to expand.
FoE says it means no-one in the country would be allowed to turn on a light or drive a car, because too much pollution would be emitted by planes.
North West FoE chairman Frank Kennedy said: "Liverpool airport's flight traffic has been growing at 17% or more over the past five years.
"According to their figures in this masterplan, they expect us to believe that they'll slash that growth to just 6.3% for the next 10 years, then down to a mere 2.6% after that - which is how they claim they'll arrive at 12.3m passengers by 2030.
"It's hard to believe that they'll really cut growth so far, so fast, so these figures need taking with a pinch of salt."
He added: "Of course, we need the growth in flying to slow right down - which would start to happen if, for instance, the air travel industry was told to pay its proper share of taxes.
"If flying were really to increase as Liverpool, Manchester and every other airport in the country seems to want, in 30 years' time we'd all need to have given up using every other form of energy derived from oil, coal or gas - from cars to cookers.
"Otherwise, we'd be facing real climate chaos." continues (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0100regionalnews/tm_objectid=17751303%26method=full%26siteid=50061% 26page=2%26headline=green%2dthreat%2dto%2dairport% 2dplans-name_page.html).....

Initial consultation on the airport expansion plan was due to end today, and Friends of the Earth last night called into question the projections put forward for passenger numbers in the 25-year masterplan.
It also raised concerns about the increase in greenhouse gases produced if air traffic increases in line with the £600m development.
This report is more concerned with the general growth in global warming, rather than impact at John Lennon. The Wirral councillors have a point. This can be remedied by building a new runway partially in the river and angled properly to take traffic mainly over the estuary and away from chemical plants in Runcorn.
An airport is long term. Before any major growth the basics have to be right, as we will have to live with this for 30 years or more.
BTW, Friends of the Earth have been accused of being a front for large land owners, keeping people out of the countryside, away from their lucrative subsidised acres.
Jonathan Porrit was shouting the country is short of agricultural land, when in fact about 40% of agricultural land is economically unviable living of taxpayers subsidies.
The UK actually has a land surplus, with only 7.5% of the land mass settled and that includes gardens, parks and open spaces.
Waterways 09-21-2006, 10:00 AM I have heard that the switch is now official. Must be for economic reasons, EWR is closer to downtown Manhatten than JFK and has better local transportation links to the downtown than does JFK.
But JFK is better for connections to other parts of North America.

A GIANT coloured vinyl quoting John Lennon lyrics has been installed at Liverpool airport.
The artwork is the last one from this year's Liverpool Biennial to be completed and is now on display to passengers.
The work, by Portuguese artist and political activist Rigo 23, has been hung around the check-in area, arrivals area, and on the glass facade of the airport terminal building.
They are daubed with excerpts from Lennon's songs.

LIVERPOOL'S John Lennon Airport is to be linked for the first time to Finland and Lithuania with the launch of 11 new routes.
They are among the international destinations being offered from this week by budget airline Ryanair, making it the largest carrier at the airport.
Its total number of routes from Speke now stands at 34, which is expected to increase its total passenger numbers to 2.8m per annum.
Four new European destinations were launched yesterday. These were to Santiago (Spain), Wroclaw (Poland), Kaunas (Lithuania), and Ancona (Italy).
In addition, the airport's link to Scotland was restored for the first time since last year with the launch of daily flights to Aberdeen and Inverness.
By Friday, an extra five will have been added - to Santander (Spain), Tampere (Finland), Alghero (Sardinia), and two in Poland, Poznan and Krakow.
Except for Aberdeen and Inverness, most of the new routes will operate three times weekly. Tampere operates four times per week.
The airport said the new routes would be in demand by both business and leisure users, with Aberdeen a popular ski destination.
UK sales manager Caroline Baldwin said traffic had increased eight-fold since Ryanair launched its first service from Liverpool in May 1988.
"This week we are delighted to add 11 routes from the North West which will deliver 600 new jobs, 600,000 more passengers and £80m additional tourism spend in Merseyside," she said.
The Dublin-based firm said it had carried in excess of 5.2m passengers since launching its services from Liverpool.
Two new Boeing 737-800 aircraft have been added to the fleet for the extra routes, bringing the total up to seven.
JLA spokesman Robin Tudor said: "When Liverpool was chosen to be the 2008 European Capital of Culture back in 2003, we were determined to bring new services from all corners of Europe so that visitors would come to Liverpool and the North West.
"This latest list of new destinations to be served from Liverpool means Merseyside now has direct flights to 59 UK and European destinations. It's amazing to think that less than 10 years ago, there were just three. It's only recently that we've started to see new destinations to northern Europe."
To celebrate the 11 new routes, the 11th passenger to check in for the Aberdeen flight - Mary and Ged Coughlan from North Wales - were treated to champagne and free flights.
In August, Ryanair announced record quarterly profits - up 80% - despite rocketing fuel costs. It has vowed never to introduce a fuel surcharge, a ploy used by rivals such as British Airways.

Andy Pandy 03-01-2007, 11:21 AM JLA is a favourite of Polish immigrants moving to the North of England. I wouldn't be suprised if the increase in movement of labour in Europe has helped a lot to increase the airport's fortunes.
Sloyne 03-03-2007, 09:18 PM JLA is a favourite.Andy, JLA are the IATA call letters for an airport called Quartz Creek which is located in a place called Cooper Lodge which is in the US state of Alaska. Liverpool John Lennon Airport IATA call letter designates are LPL.
Even LPL airport bosses are referring to themselves as JLA now though, have a look at the press releases (http://www.liverpooljohnlennonairport.com/page.php?p=3&month=Oct&archive=2006)on their website. I hope nobody does make the mistake of booking a flight to this place in Alaska, there was a case not so long ago when somebody thought they'd got a great deal from Birmingham to an American city (cant remember which one) and only found out why the price was so good at the airport - their ticket was from Birmingham, Alabama!
Sloyne 03-04-2007, 03:10 PM Even LPL airport bosses are referring to themselves as JLA now though, have a look at the press releases (http://www.liverpooljohnlennonairport.com/page.php?p=3&month=Oct&archive=2006)on their website.Yes I know they are, however, it is still the wrong designates for that airport. They, LPL management, are only limiting their own marketability by choosing to missname themselves as JLA. LPL has been the Liverpool airport designates since it's existance, or at least since they moved to Speke from Hooten. The world wide travel industry know Liverpool Airport as LPL, it is only those in the metro-Liverpool area who insist on misnaming the place.
By the way, Toronto is named 'Lester B. Pearson International Airport', no one calls it LPA and no one uses anything other than YYZ as it's designate. But then again, Liverpool are advertising flights to Toronto which actually land in Hamilton, Ontario. No one that I know of would consider Hamilton (YHM) a Toronto area airport. In fact, it is easier to get to Buffalo, NY., airport from Hamilton's Mount Hope, John Munro Airport than to downtown Toronto. Also, British Airways advertise, periodically in the St Petersburg Times, a Tampa-Liverpool flight but, and if you read the fine print you will notice that this flight is via London, Gatwick (LGW) and Manchester (MAN) with no connection, whatsoever, to LPL. But hey! if it sells, why not?

Sloyne 03-20-2007, 10:48 PM No disrespect intended, but its ridiculous that Norwich, Humberside and Durham Tees Valley airports offer worldwide connections but not Liverpool. They all have London (LHR-LGW) connections and those airlines serving them have either alliance partnerships or interline agreements. Liverpool is the only major European city outside a 200K radius of it's nations primary air gateway that doesn't have an air link with that major gateway.

KLM and Amsterdam is the gateway to the world for Norwich and Humberside, I dont think Humberside has an air link with London. I'd be extremely surprised if any interlining agreement came via London, as BA are too far up their own backsides to have the foresight to operate any of its umpteen operations a day from Manchester to London from Liverpool instead.
Sloyne 03-21-2007, 12:44 AM I dont think Humberside has an air link with London. They (HUY) do but it is via Aberdeen on British Midland, beleive it or not. I'd be extremely surprised if any interlining agreement came via London. All airlines have some form of interline agreements at Heathrow and British Airways (BA) is part of the 'Oneworld Alliance' alliance. British Midland (BD) is part of the 'Star Alliance'. However, if Liverpool can gain a legacy carrier to operate to a major European hub, a hub like Schipol, CDG or FRA, it would be a fantastic coupe for the airport.

Sloyne 04-12-2007, 01:52 PM If the EU predictions for air transportation for the next 20 years are correct then Europe will need far more runway space than they now have. This bodes well for Liverpool. Liverpool is situated on the western edge of Europe under major flight paths from North America and the Polar routes from Asia. With room for three more runways in the Mersey estuary Liverpool, potentially, has a very bright furure indeed. I understand that bedrock, that far up river, is less than 4 meters below the high water mark.

Services to Grenoble in France and Salzburg in Austria will begin in December to serve this winter’s skiing season.

I had mixed views on Lisbon (went for Benfica last year, assume when you did), on the one hand it was cheap and had some nice buildings. On the other some parts of it looked third world and he number of people openly selling drugs in the centre was disturbing.

Yep we discussed this amongst freinds last year. Easy jet also started flying to the asian Istanbul airport last year. We used it to go to Galatassaray last December.
Rumours are they'll be off to Toulouse in October :PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Only problem with Lisbon is bugger all was open in the centre after the match (assume the dock area was open) and we ended up in one of the hotel bars instead.

We had that problem after the match as well, ended up getting a taxi to the Docas. I thought it was very subdued for a capital city.

Probably the time of year as well, wasn't very warm to be honest.
Love the euro aways but iunfortunately they've become far too popular now.
I remember getting drowned in Bucharest in 2003, even saw Djimi score for the correct side as well...

Agree over the euro aways, I give the biggest a wide berth as too many idiots. Two of the best ones for me have been Kaunas and Liberec.
Not to be outdone by easyjet, Ryanair have today announced that there will be 4 flights a week to Valencia from 31st October

Didn't get to either of those, though some people i know claimed they were being ripped off at 12p a pint rather than 10p in Liberec.
Ryanair will be serving Madrid as well from October, flying 3 times a week using a Madrid based aircraft

Had the best experience of flight travel from Liverpool John Lennon Airport last week and today (my arrival back). Completely hastle free both ways, enjoyed the experience which is unusual as I hate flying.
GingerTheCat 08-23-2007, 08:56 PM I also really enjoyed my recent trip to Dublin with Ryanair.
I used their Internet check in service which lets you print out your boarding card on your printer at home! It worked well but I felt sorry for the checkin staff who were struggling to rip off the detachable sections of the printoff from presumably a wide variety of different types of paper.
Queues were quite long with the extra travel restrictions though. Some poor guy was even asked to remove his shoes and my bottle of water was spotted and rejected by security staff.

jon_hall 08-24-2007, 11:50 AM Don't think i never fly out of the uk without having to take my shoes off these days. Always make sure i have socks with no bloody holes in them for the flight out. Never ever get asked on the way back from a foreign airport.
And those paper boading passes should be easy to tear, as they only need to fold it and tear along the edge of a desk.
Howie 09-17-2007, 12:02 AM Airport strike threat

By Neil Hodgson, Liverpool Echo
Liverpool John Lennon Airport (http://www.liverpooljohnlennonairport.com/) could be shut down as a strike looms in a bitter pay row.
The dispute is over pay talks for firefighters, maintenance and bird scarers which should have been settled last April.
Staff have rejected the airport’s last offer.
Airport bosses say they are prepared to meet with unions again next month to discuss the pay offer.
But the GMB said after six months of waiting the workers have lost patience and a ballot for industrial action could be called next week.
Morale is also said to be low after recent redundancies among baggage handlers.
Should firefighters walk off the job, the airport would be forced to close due to lack of safety cover.
Eddie Parker, GMB union regional organiser, said: “Our members would not, at this moment, be slow to request a mandate for potential industrial action.
“They have concerns with regards to their future at JLA. A number of changes have taken place there over the past couple of years.”
Airport chiefs have indicated they want to increase their ‘final offer’ and the union is keen to re-open negotiations but Mr Parker warned that they expect a significantly higher offer than previous talks.
He said: “The company are aware our members are looking for an above inflation pay rise.
“The last offer tabled by management was worth 3.2%, excluding add-ons for firefighters.
“This should have been settled in April and inflation then was 4.3%-4.4%, so we were looking for 5%, on top of other elements for the fire station.”
He added: “The company suggested meeting in October but we want to meet next week.
“We are hopeful of meeting with senior management to improve the industrial relations at JLA.”
Robin Tudor, JLA spokesman said: “This is all part of our annual pay awards and we want to keep talking and a date has been set for early October.
“We are keen to find a solution and still want to talk and resolve this and hopefully with this date set we hope this can happen.”
The dispute continues as JLA was named UK Airport of the Year at London’s Travel Trade Gazette awards.
Judges chose the winner based on their own experience of the finalists as well as passenger and airline growth, improvements to public transport access, environmental initiatives and work with the local community.
Liverpool JLA managing director Neil Pakey said: “To win the industry’s most prestigious airport award is a recognition of both Peel’s belief in turning the airport into a real regional gateway and to the employees and businesses who work here to turn the investment into a real experience.”

25 jobs are to be lost as a result of Flyglobespan pulling out of Liverpooland Manchester airports. I am sorry for those leaving their jobs, but having suffered a personal nightmare at the hands of this airline and knowing many other passengers have suffered at their hands, I have to say 'good riddance'.

Ryanair and Easyjet have both been accused of not telling passengers enough about public tranpsort links from the airport to Liverpool city centre. Easyjet recommends hring a car through one of their partners, whilst Ryanair advertises the Terravision bus to Manchester, a company they have a partnership with.

I have to admire their nerve, the airport should kick their sorry arses out when the last New York flight goes and make it clear they are not welcome back.
Ste, a good mate of mine took his girlf to NY last week, just after it was announced that they had lost their saftey liscence, took them 12 hours to get there, same coming home, awful conditions for such a long time, with kids on board too plus the cabin crew being at the front line for complaints and they are to be laid off too very soon.

Within all the hassle I had I really felt sorry for the cabin and ground crew, who got unnecessary grief due to the incompetence and arrogance of management in Edinburgh. At the end of the day they wanted to get home as well.
