What made me laugh about Ruthin Gaol (it was 2002, may be different now) was that it doubled up as council offices and we'd be touring round and workers were sat in these dingy cells with just a chink of light typing into their computers whilst tourists wandered in to take a look. Weird.

Back in 2003 we decided to do a 'castle' tour - one day we went to Dolwyddelan, Harlech and Criccieth, the next, Conway, Beaumaris, and Caernarvon and the final day stopped at Flint on the way home. They have a ticket you can buy that covers entry to most castles. The views from Dolwyddelan and Criccieth are breathtaking. I'm hoping to go again this summer and get to Dolbadarn.

brilliant picture's everyone i love conwy especially in the summer, we walk over on a sunday afternoon and sit outside the liverpool arms, then we do a pub crawl around conwy and then stagger home over the bridge eating our fish and chips
lindylou
04-28-2008, 12:16 PM
We always get fish & chips in Conwy. A bit of a ritual really -we often stop off there on the way past, get something to eat, then continue on. :) There's something nice about sitting there overlooking the harbour eating fish & chips ( with a gang of seagulls and pigeons around your feet !!)
Pasha, do you remember the 'harbour cat' that was there for years ? he was a lovely cat - so tame and he would come up to anyone who was eating and he would sit there scrounging fish. :)
He never bothered the birds around him. He was a long haired ginger cat. I havn't seen him the last year or so. I'm wondering if his owner moved, or perhaps he has died of old age - he was there for years. I think he must have lived near the 'Smallest house' - he was always around there.

Sometimes if I can persuade Mrs SteH to take our son to the beach or arcades on her own I slope off to a footy game. Its a great change from the overpriced Premiership and at many ngrounds its possible to buy a pint and watch the game from the bar. Rhyl are regular participants in Europe for Wales, while Prestayn have just been promoted to the premier division. Airbus are perrenial strugglers in the premier division. Colwyn Bay have refused to join the Welsh system and play in the English pyramid, currently in the southern section of the Unibond League 1st division. Just to show Evertonians what it looked like as they never got to play there, I've added one of the Millennium stadium in Cardiff as well :unibrow:

Had many holidays there in the late 50's/early 60's. My mum and her brother had been evacuated there in the war so knew the place. It was also easy to get to before we all had cars. Bus from Skelhorne St to Conway, then local bus to Penmaenmawr.
I've stopped off there a few times over the years, for a short walkabout, and it still has a place in my heart!

This was a hunting lodge owned by the owner of a chain of Liverpool shops but i can't remember the name i have an idea but i would be guessing, something like Waterworths or Maypole.

Due to the abundance of forms of transport related to the site, this was the theme chosen for the artist's brief. As a result of the national competition, Brian Fell's design was chosen as the design incorporating the most basic form of transport - walking.
I'm surprised Colemendy, Loggerheads, Star Crossing haven't been mentioned.
I'm surprised Colemendy, Loggerheads, Star Crossing haven't been mentioned.
Colemendy! That brings back memories, of the early fifties before they built the school on the hill. We had to cook our dinner over an open fire on the site where the school now stands, water from the stream down the hill, carrots and spuds peeled with a penknife. tears streaming down your face if you had to peel the onions. Boys were training to be men then, anyone of us could have gone on to be Ray Meares.

Cemaes Bay, Anglesey.
Cemaes Bay. Anglesey.
Very nice pictures!
Had some good holidays on Anglesey.
Didn't the Royal Charter Go aground on one of those bays?
It was coming home from Australia, stopped at Holyhead, then tried to make it to Liverpool during a gale.
There was gold coins washed up on the beach for many years afterwards.

It's a shame to see the place so neglected.
Took a walk up there recently. It's quite spooky up there as it deserted and so quiet
I saw a horse and carriage going through the main gateway. Also this spooky looking tree is on the overgrown driveway ! :ninja:

Thanks for that Lindylou.
I'll check with my Dad if there's more than one church there. "Ours" would be a Welsh-speaking non-conformist chapel. My grandfather was a lay preacher who, after he moved to Liverpool, would preach all over the North West and N.Wales in Welsh every Sunday. Most of the chapels in Merseyside have sadly closed nowadays. His "local" was the Waterloo one, now gone.
Julieoapw, this is the graveyard of the church in the previous pics. I wonder if it was the same place by any chance.
You are welcome to keep any of the pics if you want them.

Directions to get there:
1 mile from Denbigh town centre.
Drive through Denbigh town square, through Lenten Pool and up the hill past Morrisons. Take the first turning left past Morrisons, then the next turning right on to the B4501 Nant Glyn road.
Follow the road around a sharp right hand bend. Drive up the hill and you will find our entry 250 yards up the hill on the left hand side.

Plans are afoot for a memorial to be built in memory of Tom Pryce, the F1 driver who was born in Ruthin on June 11 1949.
A quiet, modest and gentle man it is unfortunate that Tom will be forever remembered for the horrific accident that killed him at the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami on 5th March 1977. On lap 22 of the race a 19 year old track marshal, Frederik Jansen Van Vuuren, crossed the track to tend a fire on Renzo Zorzi?s Shadow car (Zorzi was Pryce?s team-mate). Just past the Kink section of the circuit German driver Hans-Joachim Stuck narrowly missed Van Vuuren but Pryce didn?t, hitting him at 170mph. Van Vuuren was killed instantly. Bizarrely, the 40lb fire extinguisher Van Vuuren was carrying hit Pryce in the face. Death was instantaneous. Pryce's car continued on down the main straight with his helmetless body still in the cockpit until it finally left the track at Crowthorne Corner, taking the Ligier of Jacques Laffite out of the race in the process. Tom?s helmet had been wrenched off and he was almost decapitated due to the strap. (The sequence is on youtube but I would counsel you to avoid it?it is not for the squeamish). It would also be the final race of Brazilian driver Carlos Pace - he was killed in an aircraft accident less than two weeks later.
Tom?s greatest results were his 3rd place positions in both the Austrian and Brazilian Grands Prix. He also won the 1975 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch which included drivers of the calibre of Ronnie Peterson, Emerson Fittipaldi, Jacky Ickx, and Jody Scheckter.
Hopefully the memorial will be erected in the town in his honour.

OMG the sea zoo  What a waste of money that was, the day we went. It wouldn't be out of place on Craggy Island along with a fair that has a crane lifting a park bench up in the air. I'm sure there was a fella sitting on the wall outside the aquarium with a 'I Shot JR' t-shirt on

Would like to go in for another one maybe in the future sometime, and in a different location - deeper into Snowdonia or Anglesey perhaps. We'll see how things go. There are lots of things to take into consideration, different family commitments etc.

We spent many a summer holiday camping in Anglesey when I was a kid. Always seemed to find sites with minimal facilities so had to make our own entertainment once it started getting dark. This usuallly revolved around a game of "tuppence ha'penny" by the light of an old calor gas lamp. Remember little things like me Nan teaching me to play Crib, lack of hot water in the "shower" block, walking miles to find a shop, etc.

I remember a couple of holidays in Dyserth - less than a mile from Gwaensygor - in a small caravan in the late 50's.
A few things really stand out - how small the caravan was - the one-arm bandits that took pennies in Prestatyn - walking to Dyserth Falls - how it rained so much someone lent me a wooden boat model to sail in the rivers that used to be the roads in the caravan site...:) - and good ice cream from the local Dyserth shop, where we got great service because my mum ordered in Italian.

Why can't I get excited about Wales? It is just on our doorstep and I did the usual holidays when I was a kid to Towyn, Abergele, Conway etc. I am half looking at static caravans. I already have a large tourer but I really want a holiday home. Ive looked at loads on the net but I suppose the trick is to get out and find a location that you want to go to. However, Wales is just not on my radar. Don't know what it is but it does nothing for me. I prefer Scotland and i love Shropshire. Maybe even the Wirral but Wales, no way pedro!

(I took the photos looking through glass so hence the glare on some of the pics !)
Lovely vans as you say Lina, very expensive. Site fees too are dear. Some places want nearly £4000 a year for the top ones. The average seems to be £2000 - £2500 a year plus electric and council tax. So the expense is like having another mortgage but the caravan de-values so quickly. I love the way that some of these holiday companies call them "investments"!
