View Full Version : Fazakerley.
West Derby Homes off Longmoor Lane in Fazakerley included a baths and quarantine home where the 'inmates' were scrubbed clean.
In the late 1800s, industrial trainers and teachers taught the children the art of fruit, vegetable and flower growing as well as tailoring, baking and shoemaking. They are still owned by the council including the social services division and it is like a little village within a city.

Known to us 'Oldies' as Fazakerley Cottage Homes.
I spent a year+ there just after the war.
The building you can see on the right of the clock tower was the 'home' I was in (I think it was No 12).
Also to the right of the clock, but out of picture, was the baths and a yard for the workshops and utillities.
To the left of the clock was a short side road where the school was. That at one time also had a swimming pool in the basement.
The Hall in the centre was the Chappel amongst other things. I remember having a xmas party there.
From there I went to Olive Mount for a number of years.
Do a Google search for Friends of Fazakerley. I think they may still have a site up.

Thanks for that Ged mate.
Funnily enough I never learned to swim there. The place I learnt to swim was just across the fields, down the lane??, in the L & L Canal from the old swing bridge.

I wonder why the Acorn Centre?.
In previous years it was held in the Chapel on the grounds.
Plenty of old pics to look at and people to chat to.
The atmosphere was great.
Unfortunately I will not be able to attend as still suffering post-op.

All the best on your recovery phredd.

When I was a kid Cottage homes (Cotty home to us kids) was a nut house.
Little did we know being so young and nieve that it also housed disabled people .
Car boot sales have since been held in the church hall and most of the houses are now being used as offices for local services.

Saw the tower from the first one tonight. Not noticed it before but saw it from the train on the way back from work in Kirkby.

Just came across this site which is both about the Fazackerley family and the area more usually spelled today Fazakerley.
http://www.fazackerley.co.uk/
The site is by Dave Fazackerley and I thought it was well done with interesting information and graphics, all presented as if you are reading an old book about the family and the location. Nicely done, Dave. :PDT11
I'm sure other members of Yo Liverpool know about the site but it was new to me. :PDT_Aliboronz_24:

I've got this saved in my favourites already. It's brilliant the way it's been done.
I have walked the Fazakerley grounds for many years. I remember the old clock house.
Thanx for the reminder Chris.:PDT11

I have worked quite close to the Cottage Homes for over 20 years. What has always fascinated me is the fact that one of the houses in all that period of time has been derelict.
The one on the west side of the clock tower near the swimming pool.
The wall that was obviously built around it looked like it had been there quiet a while when I first cut through there in the late 1980s.
Does anyone know why this one of the houses became derelict and why nonone has ever tried to restore it nor has there been any attempt to knock it down.
Some years ago there appeared to be a plan to sell the whole site off for conversion to residential use and apartments but nothing appeared to come of it.
The site must have quite a history - perhaps one day someone will write one?

Thanks a bunch Chris.
Here's why it is called "Bluebell Woods". (One time it used to be a mass of Bluebells, that was until they built HMP Altcourse and chopped down loads of trees.)

I was brought up in the FCH and spent some time in Cosh 15 which is the one burned out next to what was the club and over the road from the church - that was. I did attend some of the reunions, but having seen the mess they had made of the church, I was very sad and did not go again.

It used to be called The Cottage homes, Then Newhall, I visited there quite alot as my brother lived there. Awful place it was. So glad that Newhall closed down, and put people with disabilities into the community. The best thing they could have ever done.

Always wondered where Clock House was Zapp, seen it on maps but theres no evidence of it, even in the 70s when it was my playground, you must remember Harbreck House, or the White House as we knew it in the 70s,with the rookery on the bridge and the orchard, and the Lodge on Higher Lane, the gates stil exist.....just.

There is a reunion of ex residents of Fazakerley cottage homes this coming saturday between 2pm and 10pm at the Acorn centre, Longmoor Lane, Fazakerley.
I'd be very interested to contact any residents from the 1930's. My late father was Vivian Potts (may have been known as John Potts) and I think he was a resident of Cottage No7 (?), admitted in 1937. He had a 'hare lip' (possibly surgically repaired by that time). We think he went on to the 'Working Boys home' in Shaw Street afterwards. Anyone remember him?
Any information (or guidance as to which forum may be more appropriate) is really appreciated.
Many Thanks,
Martin Potts.
The Cottage Homes Society are holding their annual get together at the homes, now known as New Hall from noon on Saturday 25th June 2011.

I learned to swim in the Cottage Homes baths. I also took lessons, passed the life-saving exam there and was awarded a bronze medallion. I used this experience later on in my life to brush up on the life-saving techniques and became a voluntary lifeguard at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury for a few years.
I also used to swim, with a lot of other lads, in the canal by the swing bridge. When a dead dog or cat came floating along we all got out, let it past, then jumped in again and carried on swimming.
Regarding the history of the Cottage homes. I am an ex-resident and I am writing a book on the history of the Homes. We were generally known as "The Cotty Homers" and those from outside the home were referred to as "The Outsiders". If anyone, Cotty Homer or Outsider, has a story to tell either reply here or email me at eddie@schleising.net.
Incidentally, the Fazakerley Cottage Homes was not built as a "Nut House" as has been stated in a previous post. It was built in 1888 to house pauper children, children whose parents could not afford to keep them, quite often people committed to the workhouses, and orphans. By the end of the first world war, the Homes had become a place to house children orphaned by war and any who were unfortunate enough to fit into the previous categories, along with abandoned children. Some children, during my time in the 1940's to 1950's were abandoned because they didn't meet the requirements of their parents. This could be because they were less able to cope with the world, had learning difficulties and/or had physical difficulties. In those days the welfare state did not provide allowances for such children to be kept at home, so life was more difficult for parents who could not find work. Fazakerley Cottage Homes was never a "Nut-house".
The next Reunion for Fazakerley Cottage Homes (Liverpool) Association, which has a membership of over 300, is to be held on Saturday, June 16th, starting at 12:00 noon and ending at 8:00 pm. Both ex-residents and outsiders are welcome.
