Extra 11,000 Paul McCartney concert tickets in bid to cover costs
Apr 15 2008
by David Bartlett, Liverpool Daily Post

THOUSANDS of extra tickets are to go on sale for Sir Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Sound concert on June 1 to cover mounting costs, the Daily Post can reveal.

Liverpool Culture Company is to offer 11,000 tickets on top of the 25,000 already sold for the concert at Anfield to cover a budget increase from around £1.8m to nearly £2m.

An internal Liverpool Council document, obtained by the Daily Post, reveals these costs are on top of £323,000 spent on the aborted plan to hold the concert in the Salthouse Dock.

Just been on Roger Philips that Macca's fee is zero pounds. The money is in an escrow account to cover other costs.

I'm a bit cheesed off - not with Macca but the council. Paid around £67 for a ticket (still not received although credit card debited ages ago) on understanding there would be international stars as well as Macca. Now see we will get "cutting edge local groups" - in other words, cheap semi-pros. Nothing against them but not what we were promised. Would prefer Macca to do whole concert but don't suppose he will. It seems as if the council are determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

It really is a farce, I mean didnt they realise when they were first organising it that a 25000 capacity wasnt going to cover the costs. I think they've woeflly overestimated media interest and now they seem to be settling for a highlights showing only on the BBC, unlike the worldwide live exclusive they promised. It reminds me of the concert at the Pier Head in 1990 to commemorate what would have been John Lennons 50th birthday and only 15000 tickets were sold when they expected 40000. Like you Julie they took my money at Christmas, but they have now admitted the thing was close to being cancelled. And there was me thinking the tickets hadnt been sent out to minimise touting.

Paul McCartney Liverpool Sound gig cost refund

May 29 2008 by David Bartlett, Liverpool Echo

REFUNDS have been given to around 10% of ticket holders for Sir Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Sound gig on Sunday.

It comes after a campaign against the Culture Company by people who bought top-priced £75 tickets last year found they were to be seated in the same area as those paying £35 and £55 now.

Last month, it was revealed that 11,000 tickets, on top of the 25,000 originally sold, were to be put out for sale to cover the mounting costs.

Allocating additional tickets and a re-design of the stage has led to a “reconfiguration” of seats for the concert.

Kris Donaldson, director of Liverpool Culture Company, said: ''The Liverpool Sound capacity has expanded by 11,000, and stage specifications have also changed. Both of these developments will be of benefit to concert-goers.”

Sir Paul McCartney rocks Anfield for Liverpool Sound
Jun 1 2008

http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/liverpoolpost/jun2008/4/7/462BA182-B9EB-F35C-888B67CCB78D5815.jpg

Sir Paul McCartney took to the stage in Liverpool tonight to mark the city’s Capital of Culture Year.

The 65-year-old began his set at Liverpool FC’s Anfield Stadium with Hippy Hippy Shake, followed by Jet and Drive My Car.

Dressed in a black, sixties-style suit, the former Beatle said to the crowd: “Thank you for coming tonight - in the city of culture -at the centre of the universe.”

The show, called Liverpool Sound, was opened by The Zutons, with a set list including Valerie and Why Won’t You Give Me Your Love.

The audience were then treated to the Kaiser Chiefs, whose songs included Ruby and The Angry Mob.

Lead singer Ricky Wilson joked with the crowd of Paul McCartney fans: “Now a new song, though I realise they’ll all be new to some of you.”

Comedian Peter Kay welcomed Paul McCartney onto the stage, saying “It’s my duty to reveal that Britain has got talent.”

McCartney is expected to be joined on stage by Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

All 45,000 tickets to the Capital of Culture 2008 showpiece event were sold out, and the audience filled the Anfield pitch and three stands, including the Kop.

It sounds a great concert. Its a shame the BBC seems to have used a TV director who doesn't seem to know what he/she is doing. Its a mess. :disgust:

Just got in from the show... all I can say is, I was blown away. Looking at it on the TV, it looked packed, sold out, jumpin' and rockin'.

I had an amazing time, and I feel justifiably proud of the Scousers who attended, and the welcome they all gave to the visitors who managed to get tickets.

A thoroughly good night for the city, I feel.

I went too - Macca did us proud. Culture Company made a mess of getting everyone in - the queues stretched for streets and some didn't get in in time for start of Zutons set. The police were pissed off - they said it was not their idea not to open all the turnstiles and put everyone in one queue. I think they gave up searching everyone eventually because suddenly, we all got it. Every fortnight, LFC manage to get a much bigger crowd in no hassle.
But soon forgot that with Macca's brilliant set and the great party atmosphere.

I felt sorry for the Kaiser Chiefs & The Zutons. It came across on TV as if the lead singers were getting angry with the crowd for not cheering, singing along, dancing etc...
The crowd did seem a bit bored and most weren't joining in.
They only really became more animated and louder as it got darker and when McCartney came on.
It was obviously a different experience for the people at the event, but this is how I felt it came across on TV.

The concert was amazing. I don't like the Zutons but to give them credit they were good live (I think people would have been more receptive if they didn't sl4g Liverpool off so much). The Kaiser Cheifs were amazing. Me and my GF were both dancing away like fools. The Mexican wave was a sight to behold. And Macca's instalment was legendary.

A great night!

we heard them in Bootle! thought it was thunder. it was only when one of my step-daughters mentioned the fireworks today I realised what it was.

I've taped the concert so will catch up on it tomoz when I've got plenty of time to enjoy it.

Pleased it was a success. Just wish I'd have had the money to enter the draw for tickets.

We are gutted that we didn't make the effort to go to the concert, especially as it was almost on our doorstep ! but I'm afraid the ticket prices were too expensive for 3 of us to go - it would have been near £200 !! It was £75 for adults and £55 for kids.
My backache wouldn't have endured 4 hours of standing up in those crowds either !! (yes I must be getting old !! )
I do feel a pang that we should have gone to see Macca while there was an opportunity, and maybe we would have done only for the cost.
Watching all those people who were there I can only assume they must have used their credit cards to afford those ticket prices :)
A few of my friends and neighbours had a grumble about not being able to afford to go.
It is often the same with concerts and theatre productions - I know people would love to see these shows - but they are often out of reach to the average person who just cannot afford it :(

That's my moan for today.

I think though for an artist of that magnitude, a living legend, not forgetting 2 current chart toppers on the same bill - so all in all a 5/6 hour spectacular and as you say, possibly a one off, that price is about right, some may even say a bargain.

I know you are right and it probably was good value for money and I'm not disputing that.
I'm just saying that many people cannot afford to spend £200 out of their budget when they have other expenses taking priority. It's hard enough keeping a head above water just paying out for living costs these days and I'm afraid the cost of going to see shows these days is exorbitant.
You really have to think twice about splashing out on ticket prices - there are loads of things people have to miss simply because they cannot afford it.

(tongue in cheek) - - Anfield residents should have been offered cut price tickets for the McCartney concert - after all we had to put up with all road blocks and crowds :unibrow:

One person said: “They only had one entry point to the ground and the queue to get in went on for ages.

“It took everyone around the back streets of Anfield which does not give a great impression to people from outside the city.”

I heard this complaint on Radio Merseyside too whilst others shrugged it off and said it was worth the wait. The biggest complaint was about umbrellas but i wouldn't want a great big umbrella blocking my view if paying that sort of money. Apparently it was a big problem at the grounds of Knowsley Hall too. As for not opening enough turnstiles etc - typical organisational skills of some on show again. As for the view whilst queuing - you can't argue with that, back ginnels are hardly inspiring are they.

He was born at Walton Hospital and lived in Anfield for a while but during most of his life while living in the city, the family mostly lived in the south end, in Speke and on Forthlin Road in Allerton up the road from Garston, which explains why he called out to the crowd, “Ok, let’s hear it for Speke. . . . Let’s hear it for Garston.”

He wouldn'tremember any of his 'north end' homes though. 10 Sunbury Road and Sir Thomas White Gardens tenements were when he was a toddler, the family also lived on the far side of Wirral during the war too to escape the blitz. He later bought his dad a house out there called Rembrant.
