does anyone know about the history of Catharine Street - I'm trying to find it on censuses before 1901, but the bit between Canning St and Blackburne Place doesn't seem to show up. Maybe it was renumbered?

Best check local directories to see what parts of the street were built when. I would suspect it was largely built by the 1860s to 1870s

Incidentally, the street was named after the wife of its original Welsh builder, William Jones.

In 1906 it is clearly there, with the Wapping Tunnel running under it: It was laid out around the 1840s If I recall correctly:

It was built by a Welsh builder who named it after his mother Catharine.

Thanks chaps. It's more the street numbers I'm after as our house appears in the 1901 census but not before but it was definitely built in the mid C19.
