Default St Georges Hall

I found this glass slide on eBay, and i have to ask a few questions.

1) has anyone any idea of the date (Approx) i notice the statue of
Major General William Earle is missing (any idea when the statue was erected).

2) there is a water stain in between the glass plates, any idea if i can get
it cleaned profesionaly? ( I removed the stain using Photoshop)

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks Mal

Can i see the plinth for Earle's statue, it looks like it is there?

What is happening by the train station entrance to the left of the steps, is that some kind of stall, looks like placards against the wall.

St. Johns shows in the Lumiere Bros. movie which was made in 1897 I think.

Yes, I think it was Codman's. Don't know exactly though when they were there.

Sorry not to be able to suggest anything, but, being new to this forum, I just though it is an excellent historical photo.
These days just about an impossible shot during most of the day I imagine, with all the cats and double decker buses passing through that area now.

It looks very much like the timescale of the Lumiere Bros motion footage so i'd suggest around 1897 too.

St. John's Gardens, originally called the heath and then the cemetery to the church was laid out in 1904.

In 1883 Disraeli was put where the cenotaph now is.
The equestrian statue is Prince Albert (1866).

I've had a go at restoring a number of these, mostly successfully, sometimes not so. If you can manage to pry apart the two pieces of glass, a soak in warm water with a tiny bit of gentle soap should lift off the muck. Don't scrub at it! Let the plates dry and rejoin them with some thin tape round the edges.
I'd be happy to have a go for you but it's a risky business- if you really don't want to lose the slide, best leave it alone.

Moving on, does anyone know the fate of the fate of the magnificent sculptures that once resided in the triangular space at the top? I heard they were removed "for safety reasons"- but where are they now? If still in existence, shouldn't they be restored to their former place?

Safety reasons.....glorifying slavery. I've heard different stories. It appears cost is an issue and there was a fund up and running. Talk also of a plastercase replacement. We do have a conservation centre there down on Whitechapel.

With regard to the missing statuary from the gable end of Georges Hall:-The Greeks are holding them hostage until we return the Elgin Marbles...............

But according to one of the guides there "They were so badly affected by pollutin that they were impossible to repair" I remember them very well and would love to see something put up there to replace them, maybe a representation of the stoning of Ringo Starr for his rip off on the big night. What would other Yo Liverpudlians like to see up there, don't be too serious now!

The sculptures were taken down because there was a danger of them falling off. I have heard that they are remoulding them in some form of resin to be replaced at a later date.
